Now, I'm of the opinion that, desptie a couple of bad rolls, the match was probably lost when Immonen failed to get out at 5 -4. For the layout shown, how would you secure the win with ball in hand on the three? Anyone? Will post later how he played it.

Thanks for the reports SJM & TD. Wish I could have been there. Sounds like some very exciting matches! I'll look forward to seeing these people clash again at the US Open online BCN coverage.

Well, if you go for the run out, which requires a lot of travelling (as shown in the diagram), I would approach it as illustrated. The letters indicate where the cue ball stops after each shot. The black/blue line indicates the trajectory of the cue ball. The red arrows indicate the pocketing trajectories of the object balls. The reason I would start out at "X" is because it gives me a chance to kiss off the 7 gently and move it into a better position, but even if I just stick on the bottom rail, I have an angle to go up table off the 5 with bottom left. My guess is that Mika probably erred getting from the 5 to the 6?

The error was made on the three. Mika played it the way you diagreammed, but played a bit too long and a bit too hard, ending up hooked behind the nine. Remarkably, he kicked the five in, but was nine feet away from the six. Tried to bank it into the pocket where the seven ball was, but missed and sold out.

SJM, would you have played it that way? Why not stay on the other side of the 9 and cut in the 5?

No, I wouldn't have played it that way, and I discussed the position with three pros in attendance.

All four of us felt that playing across the obstructing nine was bad form. Everybody agreed that either a) accepting the cut on the five, b) cutting the three backwards into the corner where the seven sat and playing the cue to the opposite long rail and back under the five, or c) playing shape for the five-seven combo were better choices. We agreed that the choice was very close between these options.

Think Mika was trying to nudge the 9 and maybe clear a little more room to play the 7?

Thanks for the match report, sjm. I was anxious to hear how the final matches went since I wasn't able to attend.

Obviously, this is an incredibly tough layout. Was it still rack-your-own Sardo rack in the semis? What accounts for this much travellig? I noticed the format changed to 7 games for the TV rounds, so I wonder.

Anyways, it appears to me taking a longer cut on the 5 is the higher percentage play. I considered kissing the 3 off the 7, but on second thought, I think that may be too risky because that ball may cluster up with the 9.

The 5-7 combo doesn't seem to play that predictably either, especially if the 7 is frozen. Wouldn't it be hard to control the 5 in that instance? Maybe you just have to take your losses and play the cueball right above the side after pocketing the 3. I understand there is lots of travelling to be done, but then it's a matter of keeping your angles.

Do you think Mika was trying to bump the 9 out off the rail? Thanks, I'm sure you had a great time!

Wow! Hard to believe I failed to relate this. The ball were racked by a particularly tall and curvy blonde in her late twenties, whose efforts were particularly well-receivied by the cheifly male crowd.

There were, of course, a few that just couldn't help themselves, yeliing out "nice rack" immediately follwing the racking of the balls. I feel quite certain they weren't commenting on whether the balls were frozen.

PS Too bad you weren't there, Lewdo. FYI, of the three choices I listed on the three ball, I favored choice b. No, the seven wasn't frozen.

Despite his hard luck at the World Summit, Immonen looks like a serious contender at the US Open. He's playing great pool right now!

Yes, that may well have been his plan, Travis.

Off topic....Beetle, how did you get so many lines to appear in the WEI table? My table only shows up with 4 straight lines, and 4 masse lines.

I was wondering the same. When I need a few more line than Wei offers, I draw the extra lines using Paintbrush. Wonder how Beetle did it.

LOL! I always thought they should have this type of thing in pool, kind of like the equivalent of the round girls in boxing, I know the US Open has something similiar using a "rack girl" in between racks, but she wasn't wearing a skimpy bikini like the girls in boxing. Don't kid yourself....sex sells!

Hi--
I just copied SJM's picture into photoshop and added everything there. A lot more flexibility since I can never figure out how to do things on the Wei site! Sorry if my figure got everyone cross-eyed! :p
