This may seem a bit of a strange thread, was wondering if any of the cuemakers might be willing to donate any scrap pieces of cue shafts,
wood handles ring work etc, as i am going to purchase a lathe, and try
to do simple work at home for my own personal satisfaction, i am def not
going to ever be your competition, as i own a large machine shop making
medical devices, I would like to practice on old junk worthless stuff first, as well as see how things are made, I have books and videos but is easier for me to learn by holding in my hand or cutting things apart, would be willing to pay for all shipping cost.
Just figured i would throw it out there in case anyone was willing to throw
some scrap my way, in return perhaps i could make you some intricate
inlay templates of your design request in exchange, as I have 6 wire edm
machines capable of holding +/- .0001 or better and it can machine
corners down to .006 radius max

Thanks

Well done, I'm pleased you are not going to clog up those fine machines with wood dust.

While I think some cuemakers may take you up on your offer, you may also be able to play with some old house cues, making sneaky petes, refinishing them, retapering, etc.

Dave, not a cuemaker

Look locally

When I was first getting started, I put an ad in the newspaper classified section asking for "Old pool cues...any condition". I got lots of calls from people who had old stuff in their garages and attics. I picked up a bunch of sticks really cheap. It gave me plenty of stuff to practice on.

If you need something else for your lathe or make any kind of order with www.cuesmith.com I can throw in some reject shafts with the order for you to practice on.
