Finishing woes

I am having a helluvatime with solvent pop. I have tried adjusting everything from fluid to air pressure to speed of stroke to distance from the cue. I am using some PPG Omni that I have had around for a very long time. I am wondering if it or the activator has just gotten too old. The guy at the auto body supply is recommending a clear coat he carries that mixes one to one which would be a lot easier mixing. He says it is the most user friendly (I hate that term) product he has ever used. Says I will be amazed at how much less trouble I will have. He priced it at $48 for a quart of clear and a quart of activator which gives you a sprayable half gallon. The product is Southern Urethane Universal clear coat. www.southernpolyurethanes.com. I was wondering if anyone here has used it.

The solid has very good shelf life but not the hardner. Once opened the clock is ticking.
Thanks, maybe I'll just buy some hardner. I have about a half gallon of the clear left...........hate to throw it away if it is good.

Often the wood breathes into the finish causing tiny air bubbles. Seal with epoxy before spraying and that might help if you are not already doing so.

Once you open the hardner you have about a week to use it. Two if you keep it in the fridge. Buy the smallest cans of hardner that you can.

Thanks Murray, As slow as I am, buying hardner is going to cost me a fortune then. I was told the smallest is a quart. Is that right?

I understand your problem. We are in the process of perfecting an Ultra-Violet Catalized Epoxy Finish that seems to be the answer to all my finish problems. I am happy with a finish for the first time since I started building cues. I recommend making the change as soon as you can afford to do so. You and your customers will be happy. I wish I had changed a couple of years ago. :)

Arnot, how much do the lamps on your UV setup cost?
If I might ask.

The bulbs cost bout $250.00 each. The complete system cost the better part of $2000.00, but I am not done yet! :D . I still need to buy a replacement bulb in case the one I have in the UV Lamp goes bad. UPS comes every day with at least $200.00 worth of stuff and it will continue all my life plus 200 years.

That wouldn't be too bad if two or three makers split the cost. :-)

I purchase my hardner by the 1/2 pint.

Yeah, my friend from the auto body supply brought me 1/2 pint. Nearly $14. Says on the can to dispose of it 14 days after it is opened. And I used to wonder why cues cost so much.

A little off topic but,

A buddy of mine said he uses "Matrix" auto clear coat.
Does anybody know anything about it?
I haven't found any info on it.
He can get it for me at 10% over wholesale :D .

Thanks,

Jon

I just stopped by and talked to the guy at the auto body supply. He does custom paint jobs on motorcycles. He says that the hardner for the Southern Urethane holds up really good after being opened. Says he has never had any go bad. He said after opening he puts the can in a ziplock freezer bag. I think I'll probably try that product next. If it is as good as he says, I will let you guys know.

Thanks Michael. The hardner was the problem. Got some new and it came out nice and slick.

Oh yes - sounds just like my life. And I have gotten to know the ups drivers -names, spouses names, kids problems, what kind of pet they have - when you see them everyday they are part of your life - just wish they would buy a cue or two.
