I have a friend that came up to me and says,"HEY would you be interested in this cue for $500?" Frankly I would have been interested in the cue for a few times that cost, so I say, "YEP, Ill take it.", I pull out the cash and pay for the cue.

It is from a top maker, four points, four veneers in each point, (2) full 13mm shafts. All straight, but in dire need of refinishing, tips and removal of an awful leather wrap. (Rode hard and put away wet, LOL).

Today, it got sent away for a complete refinishing. Sure makes me scratch my head sometimes.... Ill post pictures when complete.

Does this just happen to me?

Hey everyone is entitled once in a while...

JV (---at least that what my wife tells me about sex... :p

Must be nice! My dad ran into this a couple years ago too. Someone came waltzing into the bar with a Schon from the 80s. My dad offered him $300 cash, put a new tip on it, cleaned up the shaft, and sold it to someone a few months later for $700.

I was offered a fairly fancy Tim Scruggs for well under 1k by someone I knew, but did not have the cash to take him up for the offer :( Cue was probably worth at least 2x what he was selling it for.

Lately I've run into several like that, half to one-third price because someone just wants a quick cash sale. I pretty much only buy bargains now. You can't pass them up.

Chris

One thing that helps me and my buddy $takehor$e, is we carry cash. It is known we will buy immediately and we get some pretty amazing deals (he is the master).

As TATE mentioned, I just have to be careful. When you get offered a good deal, you need to make a decision. When you get offered a great deal you need to move forward.

If $takehor$e ever told all the deals he gets on cues, he could write a book.

Never happened to me, never will. I suspect we define "friend" differently. I often tell total strangers they priced things too low, friends there is no question I will. I was in Oklahoma City far from home looking at a rifle from a man I had never met before and would probably never see again. He offered it to me for $600. My reply was, "Would you take $700 for it?"

No obligation to tell a stranger they priced something too cheap, if a person is a friend . . . Of course if the seller sees or hears about your thread bragging you would have paid several times that much for the cue you don't have to worry about him being a friend anymore.

Hu

No it happens to me too.

If a guy knows what he has and is willing to sell it then take the deal. Geez this goes back to that thread a year or so ago when someone posted the hypothetical widow with a monster cue who calls a cue expert for an appraisal and the "expert" buys the cue at a price way below market value. If a person is asked for the expert appraisal and getting paid for that they have an obligation to give a true assessment of the current market value. If an item is simply offered for sale then there is no such obligation on either party's part.

If someone offers you a deal and they own the item then it's on them to know the value of their item. Value being subjective and all due to time and place and market conditions.

If you want to pay more than the buyer asks then that makes you charitable not more morally right.

And "friend" in pool only means someone who isn't looking to bust you everytime they see you. Friends in pool means someone who will give you $500 for your $2000 cue on the spot. :-)

Of course if it were not just a poolroom friend and instead a real friend then certainly I would try to do right by them if the price they wanted was outright stealing. I'd figure that they had some sort of trouble and offer to loan them the money against the cue instead of buying it outright. I have done this a few times for people. Once or twice I ended up owning the cue.

If he wasnt a friend I would have "negotiated" a lower price.

LOL car dealerships must love you, do you say, "Pardon me can I pay more than the sticker price for this car?" When you do that, let me know.

I request bids on new vehicles

Ken,

I request bids on new vehicles reserving the right to refuse any of them. I did pay $250 more for my last truck to buy it from someone I knew instead of a stranger.

Different strokes for different folks. I'll bear in mind that you and John use the term "friend" very loosely if either of you ever refer to me in that manner. Kinda like when the used car salesman puts his arm around your shoulders as you are walking across the lot with him, "Friend, have I got a deal for you!!"

I dont think this is something you ever have to worry about:thumbup:

I think he has a pretty good outlook. Imagine if he was the car salesman you had to deal with. It would be a much better transaction. I for one would love to deal with Hu instead of some of the people I deal with day to day.

Why would you request a bid? Didnt these vehicles come with a sticker?

Ken

deflections?

Ken,

As a matter of fact they didn't have a sticker on them with the final price. It wouldn't matter, I never see a vehicle before buying it. I order all of my vehicles since it is impossible to find exactly what I want in stock. I request bids on all large purchases, it is a lot easier than going shopping. I don't negotiate after a bid. The price they give is the price I pay or I go somewhere else.

I have made my point and you understand it. That is why all of the deflections. I don't need to say any more about our different views of what a friend is.

Yes............. ok maybe i was too quick to say that. everyone i know at one point or another got good deals on cues or sold cues for decent amounts more than they were worth.

basically it doesn't just happen to you. it just doesn't happen to me.can't wait to see the pics

It happens often...I just picked one up that way today at the pool room. Times are tough, and most gambling pool players that I know are not that great at managing their money.

When I used to hang out at the pool room a lot, guys would come up to me all the time to sell a nice cue for not too much for some seed money or when they were broke. Then, when they scored a big win, they would come buy them a real nice cue from me...of course, they would sell it back a little later for a lot less for some seed money.....vicious circle of the gambler...

Any player that sells their playing cue cause they are broke because of gambling is an idiot...

I learned a long time ago you have to respect your equipment!!

3 things a gambling pool player needs....

1..a car

2..a bankroll.

3..a cue that he trusts and is comfortable with!!
