Gas prices affecting your playing?

With gas prices at $3.00 a gallon will that stop you from going to the pool room? Or to pool tournaments? And just now the President called for people not to use gas if they don't need to.

It appears that we may be in for a real gas shortage. The New Orleans area has eight refineries shut down and that is the port area to receive tankers and they have been decimated by the storm.

So I am putting my pool hall playing on hold and I will not be driving to Spring Hill this Saturday unless I get in a car pool.

And can you believe that our esteemed Congressmen are still on vacation?

And we still have three more months of hurricane season.

Well, I'm not going to drive the 180 mile round trip to Tulsa tonight to play for a chance to win a hundred or so, but I'll probably drive the 60 mile round trip to Fort Smith.

Bob <<< hasn't bitched about gas prices since he had to fill up the rental car in New Zealand!!!

Pool Room is 1.3 Miles from Home, if things get BAD I walk

Monday I bought Gas for $2.699./Gal, Yesterday on the way to get an Oil Change it was $2.799./Gal, I saw it for $2.719./Gal, and filled up with Regular Cheron for $2.719/Gal.

On the way home it had jumped where I normally buy it to $2.899./Gal.

I live in Holland, Michigan

I filled up monday after reading about how gas was going to go up cuz of Katrina, and i still had a 3/4 of a tank but filled up for 2.67/gallon and then gas around here went up tues to 2.89 and then to 2.99 and then to 3.15 and now its 3.39 at some places.

Honestly it probably wont affect how much i shoot pool cuz i normally only shoot for a couples hours a week 10hrs at the most, unless i am gambling. But i am going to cut back on eating out. I figure i can go and spend 100$ on grocery's and get atleast 2 or 3 weeks worth of meals maybe more.

I myself i am not planning any long trips anytime soon, unless its totally called for.

dave

PS i drive a 4cyl saturn too

I thought about this earlier this evening as I was filling up my car. $3.24 per gallon, and it cost $34.00 to fill up a tank that cost $20.00 when gas was "only" $2.20. The pumps were all being used (no doubt all regular unleaded), and the weight of everybody's worries was heavy in the air. We must've been collectively wondering how soon we'd see $4.00.

The pool room I go to is about ten minutes away by foot, so that helps. But since I'll still be using that expensive gas to drive to work and run errands, I'll probably play about once a week.

I'll definitely take lunch to work, including drinks and munchies. It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

We filled up both trucks today, cost around $150.00 UGH!

Chicago is anywhere from $3.00 to $4.00 a gallon, thank goodness the poolhall is only a few miles away, it's the cheapest place to visit.

I hear that Texas is anywhere from $5.00 to $7.00 a gallon and that MO is without gas.. Anyone from those areas?

You know, If everyone in the US didn't buy gas for 1 day in protest, it would cost the gas companies millions... I say we protest! :D

Ya know what is funny, is even with the cost of gas,,, i still see people speeding all the time, i seriously dont go over the speed limit anymore. Yet i see people passing me like its nothing. Do people not realize the more they speed the more it costs them.

I myself, i can see alot of crap in the U.S. happening if gas hits a average of 4$ a gallon, people wont go anywhere, which means spending less, which means business's will fail or lose money, which means everyone else makes less money. Its a domino effect.

I've NEVER been one to watch gas prices or keep an eye on my gas mileage. It's something you've got to have, so I just buy it.

But now it's a different story. I will definitely conserve my gas. One reason is because it's so expensive. Another reason is that when you go to get gas the next time, there might not be any! So use it sparingly.

I 'll play after work, but not make a special trip to play. I live about 60 miles round trip from the pool room and 50 from work. There was some guy in his Hummer bitchin about prices last nite at the gas station. I smarted off something about that being his only vehicle. I'm sure his Lexus gets better mpg. I bought 5500 gallons of gas about 2 or 3 weeks ago for 2.16 making my boss money on that deal every day now.

Have a safe weekend
Andy

Lets keep the hurricane victims in our thoughts

I pay 1.3$ per litre for gas which would equal to about 4.95$ per gallon. About 1/8th of my income gets spent on gas. I earn about 5 times less than average American fellow at my position (4 years in software engineering), which in reality means that I pay about 8 times more than for gas than him. Even if he drove a monster car like Dodge Viper, he'd still pay a lot less for fuel than me.

But I don't care. Next year I'm switching my 115hp car for a brand new 200hp one. I'll spend about 1/6th of my income on fuel unless I get significant raise. My father tells me I'm an idiot for doing that. But then again, he said the same thing when I spent 740 euros on a pool cue, basically a piece of wood.

Cheers.

I can't confirm anything like that in my area, but yesterday it started out at $2.55 a gal for the cheapest you could find. When I left work, the best I saw was $2.89.

After looking online, it appears that I can still get $2.59 gal in certain places.

Curiously, I'll be playing more. I was on schedule to take my boat to the bay next weekend. Between hauling the boat and the boat itself I'd be talking $200-$300 in gas. So I'm leaning toward staying here and playing pool instead. Still up in the air though, depending on who would like to go along. ;)

In Richmond this morning it's 3.09 a gallon for regular. And word is it will continue to go up over the weekend. It's jumped around 40 cents over the past three days. I'm trying to conserve just because it's the right thing to do.

Only problem with that idea is if we boycott on Thursday, everyone would get their gas on Wednesday or Friday. We still gotta have it!

I pass 6 gas stations coming home from work. Yesterday, 5 of them had no gas, and the one that was open was selling it for $3.39/gal.

Those without gas didn't charge enough for it when they had it...they should have "gouged" their customers, thus allowing fuel for those who really need it to survive, not just play pool. Before you jump on me, gouging, as it is erronously called, is good for these types of situations, whether it's gasoline, constrution, or fixing phone lines, as gouging creates the incentives necessary to get-r-done.

The price is spiking because many people are speculating that the price will continue to climb, so they buy now, and this increased demand allows the price to keep going up. Wait a week or so and that intial demand will subside and the price will go down somewhat. But if the supply lines are disrupted a lot, then the price will never be as low as it once was.

Add in the increases in the money supply (inflation), govt debt (this year, your household went over $3,000 in debt to pay for the feds, added to the $5,000 your household went into debt last year, thanks to fed govt spending), and the price could hit $5 soon. Even though wage increases will inevitably follow, who can afford to go to work now at these prices....look out for a speed bump in the economy. Pool is not a neccessity (blasphamy, I know) but it was popular during the depression of the 30's, so maybe our industry will grow.

Isn't it funny how we would be happy with $2.89 a gallon now where last month we would have laughed at that price?

At poolhalls across the nation I can see it now:

"Play ya for Fifty?" "Hell no, better make it Sixty"

"7 ahead for a Thousand?" "Make it Twelve Hundred and you got a game!"

It will happen, people will play pool. I probably wont travel quite as much, but play more locally.

Here in Finland gas has cost more than 5 $/gal for many years already. Now it's up to 6.30 $/gal and it's been announced that because of the current all time high oil price, it will soon rise to a record high 7 $/gal !!! Get it, 7$/gal everywhere here !? And our salaries aren't so high anyway compared to American salaries but still quite high compared to many other countries.

My message to the Americans is to stop bitching and get back to the real world and stop wasting oil ! You've been pampered too long already with ridiculously low gas prices. No compassion here, I wish the gas price will stay high and you really need to think twice before buying those 10 miles a gallon SUVs and other mindless vehicles.

I just had to reply to this thread. Nothing personal here.

EDIT: looked up the internet, highest price in Finland now is 7.15$/gal ! Sheesh... Luckily I don't need gas because I don't own a car. Reason above.
