Giving Money Back To An Opponent

What do you all think of this scenario? Have you ever given back some or all of your winnings to an opponent, and if so, why? Were you so much better than them that it was practically stealing, or did you admire their play? For those of your who have been offered you money back after losing a pool match, what were the circumstances?

Interested to hear your stories.
 
I've won tournaments twice then turned around and spent it all at the bar. Does that count?
 
This happens to me regularly, I get asked to play a lot by bar players due to the locations I play at. I simply walk away and don't make them pay. Not because I'm a great player, but because they're crap bar players that just wanna play for 10-20 bucks not having any idea what they're getting into when running into an actual pool player. I get out of the situation by smashing them and walking away.

I know that if I ask for the money it's going to lead to fighting in the parking lot so I don't bother. No one's ever stopped me as I'm walking away and offered to pay. Bar players are generally scumbags :D

Was playing with person I know. He insists we play for 25cents a game. He can't play for squat...I realize that right away. He won't quit. The bet goes up to .50 and so on. When we're done I tell him to keep his money.

Does anyone play for a quarter in 2016, unless it is a fun way to keep score without really betting?

1945. .25 was big then. J/K..he wanted to play for peanuts. Said I'd rather have the cash. :eek:
I'm just saying what a nice guy I am. I don't want to lose the friend for $10. However for $500 who said we were friends. :killingme::killingme:

Walked away from a few games with friends without collecting. The betting was more woofing than serious though

I've never given the money directly back, but I routinely buy my opponent a drink or two to dull the pain. :thumbup:

But I've also changed my ways a bit. Now I never ask anyone to play for money. However, If they ask, I always oblige. Then there is no guilt in my mind, no matter how bad a player they are.
 
I beat a guy 7 sets straight for 100 each. We played race to 6 me giving 7 and he never got past 3 games. I let him off for 400 and time.

He lost over 8 k to me in a couple years. Same guy owed me 1100 and I let him buy out for 300 when he was unemployed. Now he's back playing and we can gamble for money...not IOUs.

Gotta be good to good customers.
 
i have or rather always paid the time,and frequently offered walking stick
before i basically quit , a friend of mine introduced me to a well know fella here on az

i was reluctant to play,as i never play friends
as i expected i won,i left the money with him and he gave me a nice cue

the last time i won $1000 and ,i actually felt no joy in the win,i asked him to forget it,but he would have no part in that

i enjoy playing him,but i didn't want it to come between friends It is just not in me to let him win.
i always reserved that tactic to adjust and raise the bet

also i once beat a stranger for a sizeable bet,actually huge and he was reduced to tears
this was a big tough guy,and he was sincere

i tore up thousands of dollars worth of checks, company checks,as he let slip that it would cost him his business

i had already made a ton,2 motorcycles and thousands when i was 19 and that was a lot of money

today many fear playing on checks or credit,but my experience is that you seldom win$10,000 let alone a nice score
playing for cash.few people carry that kind of money

i have been in on a bunch of big wins,but i tried to only play professional gamblers,wealthy stake horses,
pimps and drug dealers,i won't like to take money from working men or their wives and kids

perhaps i am a soft touch,but it seems so low down dirty and mean
who can say,it worked for me.

rather have always been a soft touch,although not everyone would
believe that
today i have basically left the life altogether and have no regrets about quiting

What speed did you play then? I know action was easy to find back in the day....now it's not so easy. Everybody has info on how people play and a lot less heart.
 
I gave a guy the 5/6/7/8 once for $50 a game....beat him for $400.
...then I found out he had to go to Philly with that money for his uncle's funeral.
...I asked "Why would you gamble at a time like this?"...gave him the money back.

Edit...don't want to seem so soft...a month later he offered me the $400...I told him I didn't need it...
...but he insisted....I spent the money wisely.

same room...a biker (terrible player but a gentleman to gamble with) was trying to make a game with a friend...there was a lot of weight involved and I thought the biker was favored.....so I pulled him aside and told him that my friend was going overseas for a tournament and this was a bad time to take a win.
the guy says "Well that's different."......takes out his money and counts it...had $480...
...says "All I need for the rest of the night is $80."
...goes to the player and gives him $400...tells him he owes him a beer if he wins.

I played a guy 9 ball race to 5 for $20 and beat him 12 consecutive sets, many of which he didn't win a single game. He only had $200 on him and I let the rest go and bought him some beers. He was not ready to quit and I had to and thankfully he agreed. Games like that make you wonder if the guy is getting ready to snap in some way.

This is what is referred to as good account management.
A customer has to be cultivated and nourished. With 3 or 4 like this, a guy can make a fair living at the game and never have to argue with fools or look down the barrels of guns owned by TushHogs.
You learn everything about the guy, his job, his wife's birthday, his birthday, his kids' names, etc. etc. and you always make sure to throw something his way on these days. He will fight off every player in the city just to play with you, if you manage him this way.
This is a forgotten art and almost extinct in today's world of "mine is bigger than yours".
I myself, made a fortune over the years with this exact kind of account management.
Younger players today don't have a clue...all they think about is being king of some imaginary hill. Dumbasses.

Mike Massey gave me the 7 ,shot one handed jacked up and beat me

i play about the same now,maybe better,but only one pocket

i always had a way of getting in action,finding action,and making money

i was putting myself through college with not much help

so a typical day would find me playing 6 or more hours,making 10 stops to find action,sometimes golf,sometimes poker.i was much better at them then pool

in the big score a golfing friend was with me,he slept all night at the bar while i played and we split the money down the middle,we each had $50 to our name and the other guy was high rolling everyone in the bar at $10 pr game,in the 60s this was like $200 or so today,so we kicked it off for $50 a game

it was unusual to run into a good player in those days,and we figured what the heck

i found that bad players bet more than good players

also we were not afraid to bet it all,we were young and having fun

i still like to bet on my friends almost only,Jack potter on here was
one of my friends,but he could really play,really play

the only thing about him was he was afraid to bet on me,he thought it was necessary to make balls to win money,i didn't.it made him dog it on the rail.

but at the table ,jack never missed,it was a thing of beauty,but people quit after a few games of racking only

otherwise we would have got rich
 
I've given walking sticks after decent wins, and have asked for them as well after loses. I put it like this, "even the runner up on a game show gets a parting gift." :wink:
