Greg is the owner of the Diamond Billiard Table company and he has been staying in my house the last few days. Diamond is providing the tables for the WPBA stop in San Diego this week and Greg and I will be going down there in a couple of days. Greg also puts on the Derby City Classic every year and supports other professional events in the pool world.

But his first love is designing pool tables and he is on a constant quest to make them better. I have NEVER met anyone who knows more about what makes a good table than Greg. The last few days have been an education for me. Did you know that Greg designed the original 860 cloth? He licensed it to Simoniz and gets royalties on the sales every year. Surprised huh.

Greg and I played on my Diamond table the first night he was here. I think it plays just fine but Greg was not happy, saying it has a couple of rolls he wanted to fix. We borrowed a machinists level from Chad at Mr. Lucky's pool room and Greg went to work on my table the next night. He spent four hours leveling it from every conceivable angle. When he was finally satisfied he said, "You now have the best playing table in Los Angeles."

That's the kind of guy he is. What you might not know it that Greg was the teacher/mentor for some of the more high profile table mechanics that post on here. Yes, they learned much of their craft from him. But Greg is not one to go around blowing his own horn. So I will do it for him.

P.S. He can still play a little too.

Great post Jay. I called Greg one time with an question about my Diamond table...He offered to drive 1.5 hours to my house to take a look at it. Talk about customer service! Everyone should support Diamond and Greg any chance they get.

Jay -

I would love to hear from Greg on Diamond table sales.

I would bet they are eating everyones lunch on percentage of sales.

I see more and more Diamonds, and the only Brunswick GC I see are the older models (ie GC I, II, III).

I prefer them over all others.

All he would tell me is that business is good. That speaks well for Diamond in a bad economy.

Is Diamond replacing Brunswick as a sponsor of the WPBA?! If this is so, this is a great move, as IMHO Diamond tables are the superior product.

Greg has a real love for what he does and it shows. I look forward to the derby every year. Guys like Greg keep this game going.

I tell everyone asking about a table to buy a diamond. I honestly would not trade my table for two gold crowns. The only thing that would make my table better is if I had one piece slate.

See if you can get him to do something about the crazy bounces off the rails on the bar tables. It's making them almost unplayable.

What he really needs to do is reverse engineer the Olhausen Accu-Fast rails for Diamond. Olhausens are crappy tables but those rails play great.

IMO, Diamonds are some of the best playing tables out there and they make the best playing barbox, bar none.

Jay, I watched Greg do the same thing with the tables at Big Dogs in Des Moines for the Frost/SVB match. He grabbed his little swivel chair, levels and sockets and started re-leveling every table. The whole time he's doing it he's explaining to all of us how and why he's doing certain things. It was awesome to watch and listen to. Greg is a great ambassador for the support.

They do, no question, but there really is something wrong with the rails. The number of 'flyer' bounces that you get is way beyond normal.

I agree and disagree..

Let me explain.. I agree that Diamond tables play very very well, exception being the bar box tables with the springy rail.. What in the heck is going on here??

I also agree that the accu-fast cushions that Olhausen tables play better than any cushions that I have every played on, something accu-fast is doing very right.

I don't agree that all Olhausen tables are crappy. I have one at home and it plays jam up, tight stock pockets, rolls nice etc.. And it's quite sturdy. With that being said, I'd still trade it for a 9' Diamond Pro any day mainly because that is what most of the tounreys that I play in are using..

I have heard the question come up about the bar tables time and time again but have never heard an explanation?? I would love to know why (only some of the 7' Diamond) the rails play this way??

Like I said before, I still think Diamond make the best table hands down and will have one to replace my Olhausen one day.

Which tables are you referring to? Local room or the national tournament tables?

The reason I ask is because I have played on some that are jumpy (local) and I have played on some that are tight but good (DCC). I think a lot of that depends on who set them up.

I know the rail composition is different from the 7'ers to the 9'ers but that wouldn't explain why some of the 7'ers better than others.

Asked Greg about this and he told me that not all Diamond bar tables will play the same. It can be the rail height or even humidity that causes this. I know that the tables we played on in Reno at the USBT played just fine.

He said that if anyone is having trouble with their Diamond table, they can call him. (812)989-6665.

Greg is a nice guy. Had a discussion once with him about table design, pocket angles etcetera. I believe his tables to be the best. And I admire his desire to improve the standards and quality of the game.
