Greg is the owner of the Diamond Billiard Table company and he has been staying in my house the last few days. Diamond is providing the tables for the WPBA stop in San Diego this week and Greg and I will be going down there in a couple of days. Greg also puts on the Derby City Classic every year and supports other professional events in the pool world.
But his first love is designing pool tables and he is on a constant quest to make them better. I have NEVER met anyone who knows more about what makes a good table than Greg. The last few days have been an education for me. Did you know that Greg designed the original 860 cloth? He licensed it to Simoniz and gets royalties on the sales every year. Surprised huh.
Greg and I played on my Diamond table the first night he was here. I think it plays just fine but Greg was not happy, saying it has a couple of rolls he wanted to fix. We borrowed a machinists level from Chad at Mr. Lucky's pool room and Greg went to work on my table the next night. He spent four hours leveling it from every conceivable angle. When he was finally satisfied he said, "You now have the best playing table in Los Angeles."
That's the kind of guy he is. What you might not know it that Greg was the teacher/mentor for some of the more high profile table mechanics that post on here. Yes, they learned much of their craft from him. But Greg is not one to go around blowing his own horn. So I will do it for him.
P.S. He can still play a little too.
