Help Needed With a Tough Decision

Hi All,

I am in the process of trading an antique cue to a collector. He's given me a very interesting trade deal. I am going to trade for one of the following cues, and would like some input from you cue afficianados. The trade cues are of equal value monetarily, but are pretty radically different. Which would you choose and why? The choices are: a plain, six point Kersenbrock, a fairly ornate Josswest, or a more ornate Bill Schick. Not a bad group of sticks to choose from. He's sending the sticks out for me to try out (which is going to be the real test, of course), but I'd like some feedback from you guys and gals. Thanks in advance!

Steve

Personally, I would go with the Kersenbrock. Those cues are just plain getting harder and harder to find. Plus they play excellent. I would also consider the Schick as well.

I would see how they hit when you get them and upclose see what they look like.I mean I have a couple cues worth alot of money but I personally think they are ugly as alls H$&*.I keep them for investment. If they are all the same value take the one you like. Its nice to have something you just like rather then something that has a great name especially if your going to enjoy it.

The Kersenbrock is, of course, the hardest cue to come by. But, it is also the hardest cue to authenticate. I would like to say I am a big JW fan (of many of his designs at least) and I also have a lot of respect for Schick's work, but compared to Kersenbrock, these cues are easily found. Kersenbrock's are not, but they need to have the paperwork. I would not take one without authentication - they have been copied and counterfeited a lot.

Thanks for the replies! Why, just out of curiousity, would we immediately take the Joss West out of the mix?

Honestly dude, go for the one you like best. I can't give you advice on cues, it's your collection, you don't need our acceptance.

If the JW is the one you like best go for it. I personally love Mr Stroud's cues, I've owned one of Mr. Shicks cues and it was the best hitting cue I've ever had and I wish I wouldn't of sold it. I've never owned a cue by Mr. Kersonbrock, but I do know his cues are highly collectable. If that's what you're into go for it.

It's a hobby, if you can't have fun and get what you want, there's no use in doing it!

he asked for feedback - not acceptance

then after saying you couldn't give advice you did precisely that.

???

I guess if telling him to pick what he wants is advice... I guess you're right ;)

If it was me...the Schick. But that's my opinion. Better long term value.

Just my 2 cents... Without seeing the cues the decision is easy for me.. SCHICK.. You aske for opinions and that is mine. Good luck!

Joe

I have to disagree with Shorty here. Schick makes a great cue and some really ornate designs but if you can actually have the Kersenbrock authenticated, take it. That would be my suggestion. Bill Stroud has made a bunch of great cues but there is no shortage of Josswest cues out there. Playability and collectibility would steer me toward Kersenbrock because the value will only increase over time as these cues are harder to find than most already!

Ok, the only cue I've hit out of these three is a Joss West and although Mr. Stroud makes some great cues, but like everyone else has mentioned, you can get his cues easily. Now, a good friend of mine has got me looking at Mr. Kersenbrock's stuff and I'm still fascinated at how rare it is to get one of his cues and the man is still alive! LOL! :D

Bill Schick is awesome himself and I even got a chance to speak to him on the phone as well. I probably will NEVER get a chance to speak to Mr. Kersenbrock. However, being that you have to plunk down...what...$15,000 dollars to pay for a Kersenbrock sneaky pete, verses say $3000 for an entry level Schick, the choice gets easier by the minute, espeically if this is a trade and NOT you buying a cue from Kersenbrock.

Plus, in a small way I'm baised as well. I like Cokers and my friend explained to me that Jerry and David worked together in his shop (Jerry's shop if I remember that correctly...), and Tom Coker learned much of the craft from Jerry. So in esscence I get get a piece of the DPK pie as well. Another thing to is, I like simple cues. If you give me points, rings, vaneers and a hoppe style butt to boot, I'm in heaven.

The Cokers I have on order will be my first custom cues ever! I eventually plan to get a SW, Szamboti (just because he's a good man and great craftsman...) and mabey even a Bender, depends on my mood. :p But all jokes aside, the Kersenbrock would be your BEST bet Hunter. Good luck on your decision.

Thanks to all for your input so far! I will be getting the sticks on Wednesday. I will try to put pics up (if I can figure out how to re-size them?). I have about a week to try them out and see which one stays...

Decision made!

Hi All,

Well, the cues I had asked everyone about came in yesterday. I took them out and hit some balls last night. The decision wasn't nearly as hard after that. This was the way it laid out.

The collector I was dealing with had originally planned on sending me three cues of equal value to try out: a Schick, a Josswest, and a Kersenbrock. The Schick had been in the possession of a friend who was trying to decide if he wanted to buy it. Of course, the friend bought the cue, so now the collector said he would still like to send three cues so I could have some choices. He went ahead and sent another Schick, but this one was considerably more expensive, and now instead of me getting a cue and some cash, as with the other cues, I would have had to shell out the cash in the trade.

The Schick was awesome, but I don't think it was worth the cash difference over the other two. If the cue would have been the same bucks, it would have been my choice.

The Kersenbrock had the overwhelming nod from most people that wrote in and was really interesting. The problem there was that it would take verification that it was indeed a Kersenbrock, and then the dealbreaker was that it had one shaft that was warped, and the other shaft was really thin.

Which leaves the Josswest (winner!). It is a very striking cue. It's an eight pointer with four long ebony points with veneers and ivory diamonds, and four short, plain ebony points into a beautiful purpleheart forend. It has pretty ringwork consisting of purpleheart rings into larger ebony rings with ivory diamonds at A,B,C, and D. The butt is the same except the points are going in the reverse direction. It has an ivory joint collar with the big radial pin. It is a newer JW. The cue is in virtually brand new condition and hits like a cannon!

If anyone can walk me through downsizing pictures, I'll post some pics. I appreciate everyone's input!

I have a program that will reduce the size of photos dramatically while maintaining a good image. If interested send them in an email to: dkoopman@statestreet.com
and I will crop them and post for you.

Dave

Here you go Steve. They are all beauties.
