HELP weight bolt stuck!!!

no stroke!!!

Let me know if this is better suited under the ask a cuemaker section but I figured someone has encountered this before. I have a weight bolt with a 5/16 allen head that is stuck. I have tried an allen wrench with a tube while 2 guys are holding it, and the butt spins from our grips. So I figured an impact drill gun will work to break it up a little. We were able to hold it but the weight bold just laughed at my impact gun! It didn't budge! Any suggestions?

Some weight bolts are glued. Try a soldering iron on the bolt to heat it a LITTLE. Should be able to break it loose then.

What he said. Just in case, if it's a Schon you'll void the warranty by taking it out. Good luck.

Have you tried heating the bolt a little then breaking it loose? (Sometimes a little heat or tapping on the bolt works wonders to break bolts loose...Be careful as to not damage the cue!!!) Depends if you are trying to save it to reuse it or not... Use an easy out or take a drill bit and bore that sucker out (not into the threads of the butt of the cue for the weight bolt!!) if you don't care about it.

Are schon weight bolts glued? Why would this void the warranty? I guess it could be considered modification of the cue??

Thanks guys, I didn't actually know that! It's not a Schon.

I actually work in a machine shop and thought about this. Easy out I think won't help because gripping is not the problem. I have an allen head that is in good shape, it just wont turn. I thought about boring it too, as I could just get another bolt later, but I am worried on how I'm going to hold it without messing up the finish.

you can also try freezing it with one of those cans of freeze spray..........you could try that in combination with a heat source such as the mentioned soldering iron.

Its probably glued in. The best way is what was mentioned. Use the point of the soldering iron to heat the bolt. Keep in mind that the butt sleeve, cap and any ring work are also glued. I'm thinking that with the amount of heat you will generate with the iron, it probably won't be an issue but why take chances. Wrap a damp paper towel around the butt sleeve to keep it a bit cooler. Let it warm for a bit and try it. Keep warming until you feel it move.
Once you can feel it budge, keep going on it until its out.

Once the bolt is out, you'll probably want to run a tap down the hole to clean out the threads if you are going to replace the bolt with another. If you work in a machine shop, you'll have a tap hopefully.

If you are replacing, most likely you won't have to glue it back in. If you find it necessary to secure the bolt, a tiny drop of silicone caulking near the top of the head is all you need. Just enuff to keep it from coming loose and not enuff to give you grief if you want to change it in the future.

I would not try spraying a freezing agent into the butt of the cue, this could do some serious damage from expansion and contraction.

Drilling out the pin and using an easy out is the safest method, but heating it slowly will also break the glue down.

What ever you choose to do, don't over do it, so take your time.

thanks again for the help guys and I am taking note of it. I am really at war with this bolt right now! One of my co-workers tells me to bring to our assembly area, we'll drill a .125" hole on it and drop some liquid nitrogen in it!

You could just dip the cue in gasoline and light it on fire. That will get the weight bolt out. Lol :D
^^ Edit for needed youtube clip if you end up doing this!! :D ^^

I know you're kidding about the liquid nitrogen, least I hope so.
But then why not go all out and put a little wad of C 4 in there.

Fire in the hole!
Remember to wear safety glasses. I won't take responsibility for this one if someone loses an eye.
If you do it proper, you should be able to at least save the forearm.

Voice of reason, call a reputable cue maker or repair guy. Unless you are willing to write off the cue if it gets damaged. Heating up the cue could loosen the adhesives, not sure about freezing with liquid nitrogen. However, good luck down the path of experience, John

Thanks John for the "voice of reason" That was my plan after I get off from work today, to take it to Little Al until........I saw a 1050 torque impact gun!!! a couple of forward and reverse and it came out!!! Made my day! Sorry to disappoint my AZ brothers that were looking forward to seeing a video of the cue+C4 equation!!! Thanks for the help guys!!!

You never did tell us what kind of cue you were willing to sacrifice to the impact gun.
I would not recommend any one else try this.:(
You were very lucky nothing broke.
Did you install another bolt? I am wondering if the thread is okay.

Be very careful doing this. I barely touched my butt and it went ..........Mine was glued in so it was drilled out and then removed.

Which makes me wonder why you bothered asking for advice in the first place.

Next time you need help, don't bother, Mr Boom Chika Wah Wah.

Probably a Wal Mart Banger special anyway.
