Horrible cloth color combo at the BEF Jr 9-ball nationals tourny

I cant imagine trying to distinquish the black rails from the black pockes. Talk about tough

If anyone had half a brain, they would have put the school name and logo on the side of the table. Maybe even on the lights as well. HELLO!!!

EXACTLY!

There are other and better ways to represent your school than to put your school colors as the cloth.

Logos on the lights wouldn't be good advertising for the NIU tables. Each table is illuminated by a single bulb fixture hung twice as high as any traditional table light.

I was seriously hoping that Simonis would come in and do these tables some justice (like they did for UMichigan, tournament blue!) so I might be able to play on them come next semester, but alas... I shall be driving!

There is a psychology involved...

I really don't get this stuff. When they ruined the equipment at Hollywood Billiards the rationale was the the pool room business is about the bangers and not the players so who cares if you lose the players? That part I understand, party people and clubby types drink more and spend more money and maybe pool players are a little cheap.

But what purpose is served by driving the players away with tables like these or those at Hollywood Billiards? I understand the business you lose as most players aren't going to play on crap like that, but what do you gain? I just can't imagine that the big spending bangers are all texting each other excitedly and all of a sudden wanting to play pool and drink because the tables are some hideous red and not that green or blue they used to be.

What purpose is served here? Do the owners see an advantage to shooing the players out?

Thanks

Kevin

People are influenced by their surroundings and people are more likely to respond and wish to drink when influenced by red than blue or green. People tend to drink to soothe or relax themselves and to calm down. Alcohol sometimes has the opposite effect on people but the general reason for drinking alcohol is to take the stress out of someone's life...and forget about their problems...

Red

Physiological Effect: Red has been shown to increase blood pressure and stimulate the adrenal glands. The stimulation of the adrenals glands helps us become strong and increases our stamina. Pink, a lighter shade of red, helps muscles relax.

Psychological Effect: While red has proven to be a color of vitality and ambition it has been shown to be associated with anger. Sometimes red can be useful in dispelling negative thoughts, but it can also make one irritable. Pink has the opposite effect of red. Pink induces feelings of calm, protection, warmth and nurture. This color can be used to lessen irritation and aggression as it is connected with feelings of love. Red is sometimes associated with sexuality, whereas pink is associated with unselfish love.

Green

Physiological Effect: Green is said to be good for you heart. On a physical and emotional, green helps your heart bring you physical equilibrium and relaxation. Green relaxes our muscles and helps us breathe deeper and slower.

Psychological Effect: Green creates feelings of comfort, laziness, relaxation, calmness. It helps us balance and soothe our emotions. Some attribute this to its connection with nature and our natural feelings of affiliation with the natural world when experiencing the color green. Yet, darker and grayer greens can have the opposite effect. These olive green colors remind us of decay and death and can actually have a detrimental effect on physical and emotional health. Note that sickened cartoon characters always turned green.
Blue

Physiological Effect: In contrast to red, blue proves to lower blood pressure. Blue can be linked to the throat and thyroid gland. Blue also has a very cooling and soothing affect, often making us calmer. Deep blue stimulates the pituitary gland, which then regulates our sleep patterns. This deeper blue also has proved to help the skeletal structure in keeping bone marrow healthy.

Psychological Effect: We usually associate the color blue with the night and thus we feel relaxed and calmed. Lighter blues make us feel quite and away from the rush of the day. These colors can be useful in eliminating insomnia. Like yellow, blue inspires mental control, clarity and creativity. However, too much dark blue can be depressing.

Since blue and green colors are soothing, they will tend to relax patrons and make them less likely to wish to drink, red will excite people and raise their blood pressure, making them more likely to drink, and anyone who's been in the bar business knows that it's alcohol sales that provides the most revenue and especially cash revenue which is the best kind from a business perspective, not going to get into the whys of that, those of you in business already know why cash businesses are the best.

wow...

I skimmed over this earlier and didn't realize it was about niu or jr nat's. I live 25-30 min from there and to be honest, this doesn't surprise me. Pool isn't appreciated or even really played anywhere in that entire counnty. there used to a couple guys from out that way that could play a little, john swanson (Farmer) and Tatto Ken they weren't bad... The point is, you've got old-non-pool-playing-white people in cornville usa that run the college, trying to make decisions to entice more young people to come to their place of entertainment. Not a place of billiards. there is a bowling alley, video games, dance dance revolution, bean bag chairs etc there. I wonder if the rails were replaced or repaired, because the last time I was out there, the rails were all dry rotted and dead on half the tables...
The last time there was a successful pool room in dekalb was more than a decade ago, and they pick this area to host the event? Strange, and dissappointing... Will it be there next year? lol I certainly hope not. Pool should avoid northern illinois altogether primarily chicago, its just a sad sad thing to bear witness to...

Huh, looks like two under-illuminating, highly-hung fixtures for each table, not just one. I guess my memory fails me. The last time I was there was for orientation, and I had been up for 30 hours.

I wonder why they even manufacture simonis in those horrible colors.

It is a serious cloth for serious players

Because it's got wide notoriety for being the number one cloth in pool. So, that being said, some people are suckers and will buy anything.

Other than the unforgivable color choice of cloth, NIU has done a great job of hosting this tournament so far.

Thank you NIU

Ditto to the comments about our hosts. NIU has been a great place for this tournament; great facility [other than the table colors] wonderful people and they have gone all out to make this a good place to bring the kids. In fact, other than the colors, there's not a lot to complain about. The school deserves a big "thank you" from the pool community for making this event run so smoothly. It has been the first 'big' tournament for a lot of the kids here and I think it's been a very positive experience for them, which is exactly what pool needs.

They had new Simonis 860 cloth on the tables, but the alternated red and black on the rails and bed of the tables. I've never seen such a bad application of colors on a table :(

Justin all I can say is, I'm very happy that our youth are playing in the colleges, and not in the bars/poolrooms as of years gone buy. When I ran the BCA Jr. program, I hated the enviornments the young boys and girls were put through at the ages of 8 yr old an up. It's because of me and John Lewis that we finally got the kids out of the bars, so I think this is much better than what they have been through with cigarettes and all. Pool players are always complaining about conditions, yes black/orange look good at Halloween, but kids are much better off here than in a liquor/cigarette/adult pool room.

That is brutal. No doubt.

Maybe have the players get together and very nicely thank the people in charge for all they did to put on the event and while doing so explain in a very nice way why those colors are not the best for playing pool and offer some alternatives such as vinyl decals on the sides and ends of the table skirts with the school logo.

People don't know what they don't know. Some polite suggestions and positive alternatives might go a long way. Probably not in the near future but if the right guy remembers what you say when it comes time to order cloth it may help next time.

Black cloth is the devils work.

Correct/people don't know what they don't know, and with budgets etc. nowadays this $$$$$$$$$$ could of easily been the reason. Personally I'd much rather play with this than black table cloth and orange rails.

Island Drive, you're right and this is a great venue for kids and young adults to play at! :) ... And as I said a few posts ago, NIU is doing a great job and I think all the partipants and kids should be thankful for this event and venue.

Personally I'd much rather play with this than black table cloth and orange rails.

Yeah, I banged a few balls around when my son was warming up on a few tables and of the two color combos, the black bed with red rails was the lesser of two evils here
