How far would you Travel to the Open??

Ok here's the situation....

I want to hold the very first Tri-State Open here in the binghamton area. It would be a 64 player event, True Dbl Elim races to 9/7, jump cues allowed, rack your own, texas express rules with a 100 dollar entry. First place would receive cash and paid entry to the US Open!! It would pay pretty deep (up to 16th place), the place has 2 Diamond BB (from the SBE) for players to stay in stroke between matches. Also will have affordable tournament rate lodging right around the corner at a nice and clean hotel. I want to hold it close to the SBE so I will have a greater chance of getting the field to fill. Also want to see if other promoter in the area will help out.

Now the one problem I can see is that the field won't fill or if somebdoy wins they wouldn't make it to the Open. I figured if I hold it soon the winner (if it is a top regional player and not a pro that would make it) would have enough time to save up for the trip. So again how far would you travel?? Would you go if you won?? I really think if I do it the way I want to do it it will be successful. Then again I have people suggesting that I just hold a regular tournament minus the Open entry as a prize.

For what it's worth...

Hypothetically, I would definitely go to the Open if I won your tournament.

Realistically, I don't have a hope in hell of winning your tournament and can't pay $100 to get my :deadhorse: (ass beat).
 
The problem with being held so far in advance is that a large number of players would feel forced to take the money since it is hard to plan so far in the future for many players.

A bit of a steep entry fee.
Binghamton is a nice older town on the southern tier in NY,about 2 1/2 to 3 hrs from me. I like the idea of a large regional, i'd get to meet a few good players.:smile:

Not too keen on playing the BB's. (I think there's like two 7 footers around here that are practice worthy).

My advice: Drop the open entry so the tourney entry fee is lower. I like your enthusiasm! Save the big plans for later on though.

It has to be that high in order to pay out first and everybody else. I want to use the Open idea to draw bigger names and get more players to come out for a shot at it. No other tour (except the WNYPT) offers that. There isnt going to be any added money so everything has to be returned to the players. Pretty nice of me not to take anything away. There will be a greens fee of $10 so the owner can make otu on table time.

Most players pay 70 bucks to enter a Joss event and that tour does really well. Its hard to expect the owner of a room that does very little business to sweeten the pot if you get my drift. I am up for ideas but Ive seen what happens to other places that try to charge even $50 bucks... Nobody comes so I dont think its the amount its the people you are trying to attract. Ive played in numerous events in VA and almost every entry fee was 100 but it paid out well. Hence what I want to do.

The BB Diamonds are for practice /challenge games only so players can stay in stroke between matches. All of the matches will be played on 9 foot tables.

Well, its purely hypothetical and interesting at any rate. You would be essentially competeing against M. Zuglan's tour. Like you said: his are $70 entry, dbl elim, with 1500/500 top prize. Casanzio, Sossei,and M. Dechaine compete in e'm for Pete's sake. My odds are nil there ! :p

so what it boils down to is this: Do I pay an extra $30 travel 3 hrs. for a slightly better chance ? Between my skill and the price of ga$, my participation would be just to meet other good shooters/players.

I'm tinkin' of attending the last day of SBE, so maybe I keep it in mind ? :smile:

You got to play against and beat the best at the Open so why not play?? Even if you dont win you could still place high and win up to 700 to 300 with a good finish. Everybody understands that you have to place high to make any money in pool. Even at the highest level. Sad but it is what it is.

Also It wouldn't compete with the Joss Tour. I want to set a date that the Joss Tour isnt in action so I can get as many players as possible. Not to mention I comletely respect Zuglan and his efforts of the Joss Tour. I would never try to take away from his tour. Its very important that everybody work together on setting dates or working around others.

I think we have 2 different views towards travelling to a tourney, but hey, there's nothing wrong with it. I do admire your enthusiasm ! :cool:

As far as conflicting with the Joss tour, I only brought that up as you said something about having it near SBE which is early April. Joss tour will be in Syracuse in late March, and Albany in mid April,so ppl may have to choose.

No-one has to twist my arm to play pool, I enjoy playing a good game with decent players. Imma B player onna good day, so getting to the open would be a pipe dream at this time for me. To play on that tier of talent against them while they compete for $$$ would be "humbling" to say the least. :rolleyes:

Let us know When you plan on having it. Where again did you plan on doing it? Do they have a web-site we can visit??
