I've been cutting quite a bit with my new lathe, and I'm close to being done with my first sneaky. I've noticed the cutting tools that came with my lathe aren't cutting as well as they did when I got them. Id like to buy some carbide cutters, but so far the only ones I've found have been for metal, and are huge, lol. I have a taig based lathe, but I bought a qc tool post that will accept up to 3/8 shanked tools. Please pm me any suggestions, as it has been brought to my attention that we are not allowed to name any suppliers. Thanks!

Buy a grinder and a wet stone. Then you can sharpen the tools you have. I have found that HSS works better for me on smaller lathes

Well, the tools that came with the lathe are supposed to be HSS, but when I use a stone on the main cutting tool, it grinds it off like its cold rolled. I suspect its a very cheap grade of HSS.

Use a grinding wheel. If your grinder is eating your cutter, maybe you shouldn't hold it there so long.

A jet 1" belt sander with 240 grit works good for me with the .250 tool bits .

Get a set of indexed carbide tools and don't look back. They last almost forever on wood and if they do ever get dull.... just turn the bits.

Never grind again.

There is a company, lets say the name sounds like Barber Great.
They have, or had 1/4" indexable carbide tool sets that contain 5 tool bits.
They also have other carbide bits.

You can find the box of 5 on EBay too. Usually around $20 and worth every penny.
