Hello AZB!

In a previous thread, I asked how I should evaluate my progress (mostly for my monthly videos on my blog). Some people recommended that I try the Billiard University exams so I gave them a try.

I didn't know whether I should practice the exams beforehand, I thought it was better not to, so I don't get "used" to the shots too much.

Overall, I am satisfied. I know that I could've done better on some drills, but there are a few where I did better than I expected, so it about evens out. I am certain next month will show a better score.

I really like this way of measuring my progress, so I will most likely continue using the BU exams for my next progress videos (thanks Dr. Dave!).

Here is my month 5 video where I take the exams, I end up with a score of 41 + 22 + 63 points, putting me at intermediate-1 :

Don't worry, I'm not gonna make a new thread every month about every new video! Just thought the BU exams were worth a mention since I liked them so much! I need to stop being so bad at some of the drills in them though :lmao: (Looking at you wagon wheel drill!)

At the top of the page in the "stickies" you will find the thread for the BU exams and scores. Please post it there also so it will get included on the list.

Good stuff,
It's a great program and test.

Doing this and other test challenges regularly will track real v imagined improvements, strengths and weaknesses and prepare you for competitive play.

Exactly why I love the bu exams. You find holes in your game you didn't know we're there. Keep the updates coming

A time comes, when looking upon past glories with rose tainted glasses, and imagining reflections of such visions in our current play, is more amenable than suffering the arduousness of hard regimented practice and focusing a lens upon our current form. ;)

I would not practice the exam before doing the exam. It kind of defeats the purpose if you ask me as you want to see where you are at that point in time.

I would do the exam to gauge where you are at in this point in time. This will show you where your strength and weaknesses are. Then you can implement your weaknesses into your practice sessions more often so you can work on it more to improve those without neglecting your strengths.

Then do the exam again, rinse and repeat.

I think it is useful and interesting to do it both ways. It is fun to set a benchmark with a fresh-look early attempt. But it is also interesting to see how much better you can do after dedicated practice to see the best that you are capable of. Even if you know what to do and have practiced doing it, you still need to be able to execute consistently to score high.

You're welcome. I think the Exams not only measure progress ... they also help create progress by forcing you to work on all important skills.

FYI, I added your info to the AZB BU Exam sticky thread.

Please post your table measurements so I can add them also. Please also consider doing the 10-ball ghost rating drill so I can also add that score too. More info about these things, and data for others who have posted, can be found on the AZB BU Exam sticky thread.

That's a good start. It will be interesting to see how much you can advance, and how quickly you can do it.

Good luck,
Dave
