Not sure why they felt the need for this, but nevertheless it sounds cool. Like schmidt says - it could be interesting to see straight pool on a slow nap cloth like the gorina.

That should be a great match! Straight is far more popular in Germany than here. I would've like to see a match between Thorsten and John, but Ortman will be a good one.

I'd take John in a longer match, but only to 125, both players have a good chance. Probably even on that cloth and the short match.

I agree. Johnnyt

This is probably the best match up they have had so far. Just wish it was a little longer match. Can't wait to see it.

They probably saw who was leading the polls for the challenge match and figured they better do something pretty quick.

That is the exact match I'd like to see, Thorsten vs. John. I'd prefer to see a long match to 1000 or more points, & available on DVD. It would be a great match to learn from.

Yeah, I don't have any interest in watching a Foldes vs. Hofstatter match. I saw Ortmann in person for the first time at the World Open and he was playing near perfection. Schmidt vs. Ortmann will be a must see for me.

Oliver Ortmann is a 2 time U.S. Open 14.1 Champion as well as a former World 14.1 Champion. He has won the German 14.1 Championship 10 times over the likes of Ralf Souquet, Thomas Engert, Thorsten Hohmann, etc.! He also won the European 14.1 Championships 5 times! Fields that included the aforementioned German super-stars as well as Niels Feigen, Mika Immonen, Alex Lely, Vilmos Foldes, etc.

I respect John's 14.1 talents and accomplishments greatly. But I'm taking Ortmann in this match up.

Im with you on this,i think Ortmann is really a great straight pool player, its not going to be close i dont think,i believe one of these guys is going to put together a monster run and beat the other handily in this short race, they should have made it a race to 200 atleast.

I agree,i have no beef with the IPT,they are almost paid up to everyone Im assuming.

I like Oliver in this match. He's a monster. He attacks the table like he's going to kill the balls if they don't drop for him. Having seen him play several 14.1 matches, he's definitely one of the most aggressive 14.1 players around and I love him for it.

However, 14.1 is a funny game. Unlike 9-ball where you are almost guaranteed several shots in a match (dry break, a miss, or safety from an opponent), you may do nothing but break in 14.1 and still lose. Schmidt is easily capable of putting together a 125-ball run on his first inning. In a short race to 125, I think it's a coin-toss... with just a tiny tiny edge to Ortmann who seems to thrive against competition.

Well atleast I get to watch a decent match before I turn it off before the 'feature' match starts.

I'm just glad to see some straight pool for a change. I think this will be a GREAT matchup. Schmidt is shooting some good straight pool these days and will be hard to beat.

Well before we go listing all of Ortmann's titles in 14.1 it's important to remember that we do not hold that many Straight Pool events at all compared to Europe. I cannot bring myself to say that bar pool is a form of Pocket Billiards, although I do enjoy 8 ball on the tavern tables as it definitely favors the 14.1 players. In the States the general consenses tells us if we know how to post our quarters up for the next game then look out this player could be a "shark" or maybe even a hustler. Knowing that if your right handed you should hold your beer in the right hand is also considered a real gem of knowledge that way you don't need so much powder cause of a wet hand from the beer. I guess what I mean is if 14.1 were as populer here as it is in Europe then John and myself would have many more titles than what we do. I know John is capable of winning a race to 2000 points against Ortmann if his mind is right, and I would like to sweat this match - of course I would be pulling for John. I would also enjoy competing myself if the game were 14.1.
Sincerely, Danny Harriman
