Joint protectors for Radial Pin

I just purchased a used custom cue that has a radial pin joint. There was a joint protector for the pin but none for the shaft.

I haven't run across any protectors for this type of joint so far on some web searches.

Does anyone know of a source for these? Also, what is you opinion on using a joint protector on the shaft? I am a pretty new player and have used one from the start but for no particular reason. I carry my cues in a Action hard case.

Thanks for any comments.

I just checked Atlas and they see short radial pins. So I supposed one option is to "roll my own". Is the radial pin a uniform diameter over its length or is it a tapered pin?

Still would be interested in opinions on using a protector on the shaft.

Thanks

I make many for this pin: http://www.arnotq.com/pages/protectors.html

I use joint protectors on my shafts. I think it's a good idea because it protects the bottom edge of the joint material on the shaft. I've seen many people drop a shaft as they are taking it out of their case and see it hit the floor and the phenolic will chip away. I have an old schon that has a chip like that from the previous owner.

I just ordered a bunch of the joint protector pins from Atlas to make some more joint protectors.. I just wish they weren't the aluminum ones. I think the alu looks cheap.

I have a few extra shaft pieces laying around... if you want one, I will let you have it for nothing. PM your address and I will send it to you.

Always helpful Sheldon. Sent you a PM. Thanks a bunch.

Here's a set of tulipwood JPs I whipped up this PM for a customer. These were thrown in to cinch a sale but would normally go for about $30 for the set of 2.

Yes, the pin is a uniform diameter.

Yes, JPs prevent the chipped paint often seen on the joint face of the shaft.
