Well; only thing I can say: Best cue I've ever played. I had one build in '91 an played it till last summer. Besides the great designs and the quality the cues have superb playability.

The last I knew, Bill Stroud responds to email inquries fairly quickly. Try him at bill@cues.com. I've been waiting to see what he's working on next. I've seen posts hinting that he's bringing out some kind of alternative material cue, such as a graphite based shaft. Will be interesting to see what a serious cuemaker can do with modern materials, and how the cue buying public reacts when there's a well known, well respected maker behind the construction.

I bought a Joss West in about 1977-78 it was a few years old then, "Slick" needed a quick two hundie to leave town ASAP. I walked in the pool hall with $200 and out with a JW. It was a great cue. I played with it for many years, however over time I accmulated other cues and the Joss spent more time in the closet. I would play in bar leagues and I felt more comortable using a cue that would not break my heart if it got dammaged or misplaced. A couple of years ago I gave it to a long time friend that always had his eye on it and would put it to good use. I feel pool cues should be played with not sitting in the closet. The JW was a great cue but I now use a production McDermott and find it plays much better than I do. Thats my 2 cents.

cheers

It's not just old Josswest cues that are great - it's all of them. Bill Stroud broke off from Joss in the early 1970's. For the last 30 years he has made some of the most sought after playing cues on the planet. He has a strong following. They are all collectible.

Mine was made in 2003 and it's fantastic. I have owned a couple. The early cues with the J and a sideways W were mostly 57" long - too short for me, but they play just fine. Going prices are - plainjane - $600. Plain 4 pointer - $1000 and on up from there. His newer cues start at about $3000.

Here's his web site:

I feel the sam way about being heartbroken if mine was damaged or misplaced. I've had it since about 1974. I don't use it for the same reasons out stated, but you lost me when you said you "gave" your's away. Mine will be part of my will to my kids :)

I have been a JossWest/Bill Stroud fan for many years. I first met him in 1977 and bought my first custom cue from him in 1978. To this day, that cue is dead straight and the finish looks like a new cue. Even more important, it plays great! I also have another one Bill made for me in 1987 and I can say the same great things about it. Both were my playing cues for many years.

I also agree with the previous post; old, new, they are all great cues. There may be some clunker JossWest's out there somewhere. But, I have never hit with one. And I would bet they were not taken care of.

Bill has always treated me great and was fun to work with in designing my cues. He even let me watch and "help" with my first one. Ok, ok, all he did was let me start the linen wrap. Buy, HEY! it was cool.

The prices are crazy now. But, they are super cues.
