This was my first year playing APA Masters. My team took 17th place out of I'm guessing 300 teams. It was a fun trip for sure. My first observation is that there is a HUGE gap in playing ability between the teams. Some teams had no one over 550 fargo, while other teams had average fargos in the high 600's.

In my last match I was up 5-0 through the 8-ball portion. I broke dry playing 9-ball and my opponent won the next 7 games. I got up to the table three times in those games, kicking twice and jumping once. The guy played awesome!

More fun facts:
- There are a million people there. To get from one end of the playing venue to the other, you basically shuffle along with the crowd.
- The coffee and soda cost $4.
- Your table assignments weren't given until 10-15 minutes prior to your start time.
- The referees are volunteers and did the best they could. But I sure did see some questionable rulings.
- They switched to diamond tables this year. The tables played GREAT!
- The entire atmosphere seemed really nice, especially the arena for the final teams.
- I saw several players who are 730+ fargo rated, that was cool.
- The line for the mini tournaments was incredibly long. It seemed you had to sign up hours before you got to play.
- First time at the Westgate for me. The sports book was great and they had some good food choices there.
- I've never seen a dress code so relaxed for a big event, people dressed very "comfortably".

I can't think of anything else right now, but overall it was a good time. I think I'll go back next year and try again!

Very cool, glad you had a good time. My Facebook Memories today showed a photo of the one time our 8-ball team got to go, 5 years ago, having dinner before our flight. Such great memories, makes me really wanna go again.

Nice job!

Just curious, does 17th place pay anything?

Also, you mentioned Fargo scores. Does APA publish or integrate with Fargo ratings?

I'll echo easy-e's comments. Great event. I've played in a lot of BCA/CSI vegas events and APA has it done RIGHT. If you are scheduled for 1:00, you plat AT 1. Not 1:45. They run it like clockwork.

1) unlike the Rio, it's a short walk from the rooms to the venue.
2) more vendors than CSI
3) decent on-site food choices, including coffee
4) event staff and hotel staff are all super helpful.

My biggest complaint (perhaps my only one) is that there are not enough practice tables. We never found a practice table to hit balls before our match was called, and you are not allowed to warm up on the match tables. So, we went in completely cold every time. [And, many practice tables were taken up by 5+ person teams. So they might hold a table for a couple hours.]

We had a blast and would go back to another APA event in a heartbeat. They do it right!

My friend's team just got booted from 9 ball. Such BS. We play on diamond 7ft tables with tight pockets, so our players did well out there. They had 3 players go up one level, but nothing drastic. Won and got booted. Facing 2 year suspension.
Everyone on that team has literally years of scores in the system, several have been to Vegas for 8 ball and 9 ball before. If they get suspended it would be horrible.

As for the Minis- the line can be deceiving. Sometimes people are waiting for new minis to be available, like the whole line is. Look at the front of the line, if no one is actually buying any and you want one of the ones available on the screen you can walk to the front of the line and get it.

They don't do anything with Fargo. I'm sure most teams look up the rosters of their opponents in fargo to see who they should match up with which player.

Some of the higher-rated players off the top of my head:

Brian White
Gus Briseno
Gary Abood
Tony Piazza

I'm sure there were many more over 700, but that's all I can remember right now.

It’s called (sandbagging) it’s been a rule for over 25 years. You have two people go up your team is out.

It's great to hear about these events in Vegas et al and it's also very encouraging to see well intentioned efforts being placed into 'legitimizing' the sport.

The "Hustler" & "The Color of Money" are great picts, IMO, but I'm not sure they are the image that reflects the skill and effort it takes to become a top flight pool player.

Being out of pool for so many years, the BFR era - Before Fargo Ratings, I find these handicapping systems interesting. After a lot of reading and some 'smoke' generating thinking, I think this is good for pool and I'm really watching what's happening at Matchroom.

easy-e: congrats on your finish... It's odd to me because my initials are E.C. and Easy was a high school nick name I'd like to.... well, remember as cute.

It paid $400 for the team. So I made a cool C-note... :(
