Is there a cheap place to get one or do you have to spend a couple hundred to get a good one?

You are right on this. Complete 4 foot beds are more than he thought would be expensive. Something that puzzles me is that this repair business can make someone an average of $50 per hour or so when they have work to do, or if they only want to do it for themselves it saves them that much. And yet many hope to get into it for only a few hundred dollars. I am not saying this is the case with the original poster.I could be very wrong as I don't mess with these type of lathes an usually just read these posts to kill time but it is my understanding that these aftermarket beveled dovetail plates are not the complete lathe bed but just the top part that bolts onto the rest of the bed. This could be very wrong but that is what I have always understood. I believe the complete bed would be much more than 200.00 but like I said, I'm certainly no expert on these.

Taig style/size dovetails are available from TSP&B on here. CustomCueLathes had a couple of unused steel ones for sale not too long ago - don't remember which forum he listed that in.

Cheap and good should never be used in the same sentence...
