Learn Me the Slang

ok here goes. When I don't know something, I have to ask. And I hear terms here and there on the site which I get the basic jist of but don't understand entirely what the significance of them. For example:

...the wild 7 or giving someone the wild 7...

see, I'm not even sure if I quoted it right. I know it has to do with 9 ball and spotting someone balls but I don't play for money ever, so the need for spotting has never came up. I've also heard about spotting people other balls, or breaks but I never quite understand. Can anyone fill me in on the lingo that i'm missing out on?

I know I sounded like a total nub right there but I gotta know.

Giving the wild 7 makes the 7ball just like the 9ball. Call 7 is the same but you have to call the 7 ball and the pocket. Wild 7 out means the 7 and 8 are wild. Orange crush is the wild 5 out.

Wild just means you can luck the 7 ball in. Call 7 means you have to call the pocket.

In order for two players of different skill levels to gamble, and it be a fair game, the better player is handicapped, which is commonly referred to as "giving weight" to the weaker player. The wild 7 in 9 ball, means that the weaker player can win the game not only by making the 9 on a legal shot, but also by making the 7 during any legal shot. The call 7 on the other hand, would mean that the player could win by making the 7, but only if they call the shot beforehand, and not if they slop it in. There are a myriad of ways to handicap games, and there are many slang terms used to describe many of the more common ones.

Everywhere I've ever played, the "orange crush" has always meant the wild 5 and the breaks, not the 5 out.

Weight is also refered to as a "spot". The "last two" is another spot that must be shot in rotation (not a combo/carom/billiard/etc.) but it refers to the ball before the 9-ball; this just means that the player does not need to get positon on or shoot the 9-ball. For example, if the 8-ball fell on the break, or somewhere throughout the rack, when the player runs up to the 7-ball (there are only the last two balls left on the table), he/she can shoot that ball to win the game.

There are a few stipulations that vary from player to player, but I would say that generally a wild ball that is made on the break is a win, and if a money ball is made on a foul or a push out it would be spotted...these things should be questioned before playing.

Other weight would be giving games. For example, in a race to 5 if you get "2 to 5", that means you are being spoted 2 games in a race to 5 or in other words racing to 5 but you start the set up 2-0. You need to get 3 games before your opponent gets 5 to win the set.

Getting "the breaks" is another spot that will prevent a strong player from "stringing" multiple racks on you... Regardless of who wins the game, you would break the next rack.

These could all be combined creating almost any variation that you could think of...

Spot

Sorry for the dumb question...but if someone spots you the wild 7 can you win by making the 7, 8, or 9 with an early combo or whatever?

Yes! You could combo them in if they were "call" balls, also, but you would have to call your shot...so you can't just send it aimlessly.

Not the 8 ball. If someone gives you the wild 7...that's just what you have. The 7 ball. Inzo.......shoot me a PM maybe we can meet up sometime this week or weekend. I'll explain everything to you. :)

Yep, lean on Tony about this one. He asks everyone for wieght {spot}. He rarely gets it, but he asks everybody. He doesn't want to play anyone even {no spot}. Why? Because he hangs around the poolroom too much. LOL!!

the "orange crush" doesnt mean the wild 5 out (not at least where im from) what we in the south call the "orange crush" would be the five and the breaks... but everyone has a little different slang they use...

Damn that's strong! I could never give up my break, I count on games from it...especially giving the 5-ball, wow!

I'm like the 4th guy to say this but, "orange" refers to the 5 ball and "crush" refers to the breaks.

Here's an example of some random pool slang followed by the definition.

I gave Jimmy the "wild 7", "call 8", "the breaks", and "2 on the wire" in a race to 5 for "2 dimes". I still had the "nuts" though!

Explanation:

wild 7= Jimmy can make the 7 in any pocket without calling it and win the game.
call 8= Jimmy can call the pocket for the 8 and win if he makes it in said pocket.
the breaks= Jimmy breaks every game no matter who won the last game.
2 on the wire= In this race to 5, Jimmy is spotted a two game "head-start". I would have to win 5 games while Jimmy would only have to win 3 games to win the set.
2 dimes= 2 thousand dollars
nuts= The nuts are a guaranteed win.
While Jimmy is getting the "wild 7" and "call 8" every game, he can still make the 9 ball to win as well. The 9 ball is always "wild" unless otherwise stated before hand. The only way I can win is to make the 9. So either Jimmy can't shoot a lick, or I'm a champion to play him this game!
