Looking for tips to create a profitable tourney

I'd like to run a holiday tourney but just can't afford to do a money added event. We are an alcohol free room so basic food & drink sales won't cover a few hundred added.

Any ideas/thoughts on how to entice the players to come and play while keeping the day in the black?

Day after new years sound like a good day?

THANKS!

Day after new years is a tough day to have them wake up and play pool. I have seen many successful Toys For Tots tourneys happen. 8 Ball doubles tournament double elim race to 4 or 5, $20 entry per team plus a greens fee of $8 or something per team, the team also needs to bring a new toy in the wrapper of $10 value or more that gets donated to Toys For Tots. The winners usually donate their winnings as well. These tourneys are profitable as you can get a greeans fee plus drinks and food. Just google toys for tots near you or see a local church that hands out toys to set it up where the toys are going. Of course you would have to do it before christmas.

Can you get prizes to raffle off during the Event from Local Businesses, like 2/1 Dinner, A Free Car Wash?

Kolby's in TEMPE at one time did this, and the Player stayed for the DRAWING Post getting put out.

Each Player got a FREE TICKET.

As an alcohol free room, I must say good luck. I would be thrilled to death if I ever had a tournament I only lost $100 on. If I tried to break even or make money I dont think anyone would show up. If your demographic has more money maybe you can make it work. Good luck!!

Go take prize donations, and give them away as prizes instead of cash,
guarantee everyone who enters gets a prize. Winner gets first choice, 2nd place gets second choice all the way down the line.

ideas

These are great ideas. Here are a few I've used that have been pretty successful. Do some raffles, what we do is raffle pool cues, nothing expensive, but those are definitely money makers. The raffles are nice on the cues, just adjust the price of the ticket to the price you pay for the stick and how many tickets you estimate you can sell. Also, if you have only basic food, maybe try to have someone cook especially for the tournament. And you don't have to do anything extravagant. We do chicken and rice, BBQ, and brunswick stew. It's cheap, easy to do, and a money maker. Ask other local businesses to sponsor a tournament or a league. We have Miller Brewing Company that sponsors our league as well as some tournaments. And when you have good advertising for the tournament you should end up with a great turnout, the more players you have, the more money you'll make, and the more fun everyone will have. I've been running our monthly tournament for 3 years now, and I'm proud to say it's been pretty successful. Good Luck to you, and hope the ideas were a little help.
