Looking to buy a cue... advice?

I have been using pechaur and OB cues / shafts for about 10 years now. I think I am ready for an upgrade. I currently use a J1 Joss/OB with a classic OB shaft and a Kamuii tip. I like it but picked up a couple custom cues and liked them better due to the feedback and control. I tend to gravitate to wrapless cues. I have looked at Jacoby and Mezz. What others should I be considering? I know there are a lot of custom cue makers and not sure how their stock shafts would play compared to my OB shafts. I have given up on my beloved OB-1 after shooting with the classic because the OB-1 just feels mushy after that. I am looking to spend 500-1000. Clean looks take priority over inlays as far as appearance goes but hit and control are #1.

So your looking for custom Cue ? Or you looking for Cue too match your ob to I ? In that range you can get a custom Cue made to fit you ob . Pm me what you looking for and maybe I can find you something real nice in that range.

Thanks....

Just want to say I am not stuck on my OB shaft if the custom cue shafts play as well or better. Would a custom play better than say a Mezz? I have not really used either.

I talked to Bobby Hunter a couple of days ago about a wrapless cue with two shafts he said he was starting a new batch and his wait time would be 6-8 weeks and his cues play great

The best advice I can give you or anybody is go out and hit with as many custom cues as you can. Decide what feels best to you. This is the ONLY way you will figure it out. There are just too many variables that make a cue hit and feel the way it does. You can try two different cues from the same builder and the difference is nite and day.

You have a budget in mind. Seek out cues in that price range and plan to spend 20% to 30% more for the cue that best fits your needs.

Figure out what is important to you to have in a cue. Do you want ivory ferrules, SS joint, flat face joint, 13mm shafts, wrap, points, veneers, what weight and balance, what taper, ring work, full splice, short splice, type of woods used in cue....ect... All of these things used in combinations will decide how a cue might play or feel. Also, which cuemaker/cuebuilder do you want to have a cue by?

Thanks....

Only issue is I don't have a good place to try custom's. I suppose I could go to the derby and check out some vendor's. Do you know if they have a good amount of vendor's for that event? Also I am not sure where to look to see who the good custom cue manufacturers are. How would I check on that?

We'll be there. Check out the Murphey Cues/CueAddicts booth. Probably 400 cues, some new, but many used....can test hit all kinds.

I'm guessing Jacoby will be at DCC as well. I don't use a Jacoby, but a lot of people around here (WI) are raving about their new shafts. Very nice custom cue designs as well.

Yes, the DCC is an EXCELLENT place to see and try thousands of cues. At least 5 venders there last year and multiple people walking around with cues for sale. This is a must attend event INHO.

Cuebuilders will take some research on your part. Do some digging on AZB and read between the lines.

My player for the last year is a wrapless Jacoby with the Jacoby edge hybrid shaft, I love it. Used to play with a McDermott and a 1st gen Predator 314 but perfer the edge. The folks at Jacoby are incredible to work with so no worries there. I recently picked up a second Jacoby cue because I like my other one so much.

Should have mentioned that I also have a Joss with an OB Classic that doesn't see much playing time. Great cue/shaft, just prefer the Jacoby

I have to agree here. Best way is to test as many cues as you can because it going to be what you like. How you shoot, what size table, 9B or 8B, 14.1 all depends on your playing style. Im sure many of the pool players on this site have gone through their share of "experimenting" with the different cue makers and its playability. I am sure that the way a cue plays for one person will not be play identical for you. It depends on you skill level of course. Most people will buy a lower end custom to "test" before they invest is a bigger custom cue. Get to know the cuemaker's shaft taper to see if you like it or not. what you may like, other may not and vice versa. It all about what you like.

Be careful when people say "best hitting cue I own", I ask, then why the hell are you selling or trading it?

or the best one yet "Cue hits a ton"...what is that suppose to mean???

just my opionion...I've been there as im sure many of us on here have been as well.

good luck in your search!

I shoot with a schon, I traded a few cues to get a schon, then traded that schon for another schon. And if I were to get rid of it I would have to be getting another schon, or a runde. Though I dont find schon's customer service top notch... well below it actually, I dont find anything I feel more comfortable shooting with.

The key is what you are comfortable shooting with, I do agree with gkloop, when someone says something like that in their for sale threads I tend to stay away.
If I dont like the cue that Im selling I will be honest. I sold a pechauer because I hated it, I thought it played worse than house cues. I just posted a poison because Im extremely short on cash, but I think it shoots better than any predator I have shot with and wouldnt sell it if I was not short on cash.

It really is just a matter of trying things, and some of the best advice I was given on this site when I first joined is this, if you buy a used cue here you should be able to get your money back by selling it on here if you dont like it, if not you can come close.

+1.......My first "real cue" was a schon and it was a fantastic cue. A ton of options in your price range.....just depends how fancy you want it. Im starting to tear up as i should never have sold my schon but I need money at the time. A lightly use plain schon can be had for a couple hunderd.

Go...

Collect your money, put it in your pocket with a rubberband, go to a major show, try a dozen cues, see which one you move the rock best with and buy it
