last night my bca team held on to finish 2nd this session. i played so-so. just cannot seem to really give my best all the time in league these days.
i got to thinking it might be that i first won in team play in 1967. i was playing at a small bar called the argoyle on paramount blvd in downey, ca. thats 43 YEARS of playing in league.
i am going to take off next session and think about retiring.

Chuck, the best advice I can give you is take two weeks off and then quit!
Truthfully, you amaze me. I was actively plying the L.A. bar scene in the late 60's. I must have hit that bar too at one time or another. There was lots of action back then (for small $$). And some really good players (Peter Gunn, Bakersfield Bobby, Jim Williams, the Mexican contingent - Sergio, Mario, Little Al, Pepe, Al Nicaraugua, Lumphead, Joe Salazar and others). I did my best to avoid the good players and did just fine for a long time. Back then, there must have been well over a thousand bars around L.A. that you could get money games in. So that was a lot of territory for maybe 40-50 hustlers to operate in, although I often saw the same guys wherever there was good action.
I played pool for well over thirty years before ever joining a league in the mid 90's. It was a BCA league. I found it to be fun and very competitive. I was usually on pretty good teams and we always cashed decently (but never real high) at the Nationals in Vegas. Our Captain was our weak link, and one weak player made your team susceptible, if you know what I mean. I finished as high as second overall in the very competitive West Side league, one year winning something like 92 out of 100 games. I was going 5-0 almost every week. 4-1 was a bad week.
I never made much money in league play, but it was fun for several years until our team organizer, Richard Mikesell, passed away a few years ago. I quit after that.
