mini split for garage pool table

Hey AZ Forum,
Looking for anyone who has their table in the garage and also uses a mini split for the HVAC. How effective are those type units and heating and cooling the space? My garage is basically 20x20.

If the system is installed and sized properly, it will work very well. DFS (duct free systems) have come a long way in terms of heating. The two major brands (LG and Mitsubishi) have systems that can provide 100% of their heating capacity down -13F. They are also very good at maintaining humidity levels during the summer and are very efficient.

A system for your garage based on the size will only need one indoor unit and will only need a 15AMP breaker. My SWAG would be a 12K BTU system but that is without knowing the insulation in the walls/ceiling, windows, ceiling height, etc.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get utility company rebates. Plus, there are tax credits available for new heat pump installations.

Thank you ACL. I am very encouraged by the information that you shared. We are also upgrading our basic aluminum garage doors with a high grade insulated door. This all adds up to a win. Thanks again.

X2 on the LG or Mitsubishi and get a unit that has the best rating for heat/cold it's worth the extra money. We had a Mitsubishi in our last house and it was whisper quiet and efficient. We're going with a split on the main floor and one in the basement on our new build.

Depending on the climate you live in you might want to check into Gree mini splits. They currently offer the lowest heating temps. I believe they will work to -20 deg F. I work for a Daikin distributor but we also sell Gree. If it doesn't get that cold where you live all of the mini splits should do the job if properly sized. For a 20x20 garage a 3/4 ton would be plenty.

I have a mini-split in my pool room above my garage and it is awesome. I would recommend units by Mitsubishi. I had a Samsung Unit and another that I forget (maybe LG), but they were crap and gave us no end of trouble. I have had the Mitsubishi unit for 3 years now and it has not missed a beat in the brutal heat and humidity of Tennessee.

I installed a mini split system in my home last summer. I can't more highly of their ability to at least cool a space, (if of course sized correctly).

LG was the brand I chose to go with.

Yes, they are awesome! Mine is a Pioneer and the only issue I’ve had is the condensation drain has backed up a couple times in mid summer, so be prepared to clean that out occasionally. Also I would recommend that you have the HVAC guys install a more substantial drain tube if the one you buy comes with just the corrugated plastic one. Mine has crumbled on the outside where it’s exposed to the elements. I need those guys to come out and replace mine with PVC, or whatever they recommend.

Mitsubishi - works great for heat and AC. We use them in our commercial kitchen to keep the temp bearable for our cooks in the summer, and they are amazing. Quiet is an understatement - you don’t hear them at all!

We did have to replace the inside unit heads after 6 years due to grease buildup. They likely would have lasted considerably longer if we’d regularly removed and cleaned the filters weekly, which we do now with our new ones. For a garage setup, I’d guess there would be no need to clean the filters any more often than monthly.

My HVAC guy felt strongly about Mitsubishi being the best. I can say we loved it. The heat is shocking for a heat pump -- it feels like a gas furnace.

We also got some credit from the electric company for installing a high-efficiency system.

The house that we've been in for about two years now has a Fujitsu system. It has units in the living room/kitchen area, in the main bedroom, and in the lower, ground floor level. Up until this past winter, absolutely no complaints, but we really only used them for cooling. When my girl's parents came up to visit in colder weather, we'd crank up the one in the downstairs area for heating that space, and it maintained the set temperature just fine. This year it doesn't seem to be able to heat efficiently. That downstairs unit will blow out cool air and not really move the temperature up above low 60s in that space. I'm hoping that this is just a simple thing like needing more refrigerant, or whatever it is they pump to generate heat. Any ideas from those more knowledgeable?
I will say that these units (one outdoor unit feeds all three) have been amazing otherwise. Cool amazingly well and are nearly silent, which is great.

Might not hurt to see if any exterior walls on the garage are insulated. Not alot of garages are built with hvac in mind. Along with a good modern garage door.
Great point. I need to check on that. A builder friend of mine mentioned that most garages lack insulation in the walls. We are having new, high-end, insulated garage doors installed in May. Also just had spray foam insulation put in the attic and knee walls above the garage.

With all the added insulation, I wonder if the mini-split would still be necessary. ??

Anyone one out there have a garage set up without HVAC? I live in North Georgia.
