Well will be visiting NY for the first time next week.
Going to the World Championships Straight Pool, and in my spear time want to visit NY.

Maybe some good Poolhall's that i can visit?
Now about Amsterdam Billiards...
Is that place called "Play" still running, located in Queens?

Maybe some friendly cuemakers around NY?

Need some help here.....

Yea I think the places to go would be Amsterdam and Masters in Queens. Amsterdam is my favorite and is probably the best quality poolhall, but if you want to see some real poolhall action and stuff (and a lot of great players at like open level) go to masters.

Corner Billiards is nor bad toom but to be honest if it's your first time in NY mate the last thing you want to be doing is spending too much time in pool halls. The greatest city in the world and I'd move there tomorrow if uncle sam would let me!

I'll prob be a perm fixture in one of the pool halls though from Sat afternoon until Tue, but see you at the comp mate.

If you have any interest in 3 cushion billiard you might want to check out the 10 billiards tables in a tournament setting at Carom Cafe, Sang Lee's old room. They have a very well organized weekly league on Tue night which Michael Kang and Sonny Cho still play in. The only one in New York /the world.

Their site: www.caromcafe.com

Foodwise, you can get a lot of new york from a sandwich at katz's
Feel free to drop me an email if there is something in particular you are looking for.

bon voyage

LONG POST-BEWARE.

Short version: Do as much as you can, and spend very little time in the pool hall (but hit at least one).

Plan of attack time: 6-8 hours. Brunch at 10:00. Day starts at Noon. Go to Amsterdam Billiards for an hour. Head a few blocks east to the Museum of Natural History. Take a quick tour, or check out the Planetarium. 2:00 Walk out the front and your basically staring at central park. (get a few pics and walk in it if you want) Hike across it to get to the Metropolitan museum if you are so inclined. Eat a cart dog just to say you did it. Walk to 72nd street and Broadway and catch a red line train to 42nd street times square. [2 bucks a ride] (2:30) Walk around, get some pics and check out the ESPN Zone where they held the semis and finals for the last World Summit of Pool on ESPN. 3:30. Catch a cab down to chelsea peers if you want tourist stuff but I suggest a cab to 5th ave to do some shopping. Hit Tiffany's (which will show up as "Store 001" on your receipt, which has a little novelty value) or Saks Fifth Avenue (heah you're already there). Then it should be late enough to get to Greenwich village for a little people watching. 6:00 Get off on Bleeker and just wander into a pub or outside cafe. Drink a bit, and watch a bit. Sit around, you never know who you'll see. When you get tired of that, you can head home or take on the night life if you're up to it.

Some suggested to do items: You should check out Times Square. Ride the subway. Eat a cart-dog. Walk in Central Park. Go to the Met. Go see the Mets. Check out Chelsea piers. Go to Ground Zero. See the Statue of Libert. Ride up the the 82nd floor of the Empire State Building. Shop on 5th Ave. Chill out in Greenwich village. See a broadway show. Check out China Town.

Just my $0.02 a few times over...

Maurice: I really can't give you any advice on New York, just hope you have a great time there !!! Planning to visit the Big Apple someday myself...

yep, all the action is at master billiards on queens boulevard in queens. you can take the #7 train to the 40st lowery stop...it's a block from the stop. most action starts in the evening around 9pm. it's a 24/7 poolroom so action peaks around midnight and can go on through 3am.

some action:

1. spanish eddie (skinny and poor...don't expect to win anything)
2. spain (skinny and unemployed...same as above)
3. nelson (not skinny or poor, but won't go for more than one set)
4. ariel (nice guy, will go for a few sets, graceful loser, also wins)
5. earl (loud, obnoxious, will go for a lot, good looser...did i mention he's loud?)
6. finnegan (pizza delivery guy, carries a wad of money but only goes for one set, often cheats and likes to beat up on room managers)
7. alaska (underrated, very respected, gentleman at the table, can go either way...an open player)
8. poolmouse (only plays straight pool, hates bad table mannors, hates broke desperate mooches)
9. gypsy (ever watch "the meaning of life"? don't feed this guy a wafer thin mint, loud, obnoxious, talks like he wants to gamble, really wants to rob you, don't expect to win more than one set)

Isn't there a guy from Jersey or Rockland or Brooklyn named Neil? He smokes and wears a wig or maybe it just looks like one?
