New Ron Kilby cue on order... need advice on a case...

I just spoke with Ron Kilby and ordered his Blue/Gold/Green Woven Butterfly cue. It's a gift from my wife that she asked me to pick out. Both the wife and the cue are a keeper! :wink:

I need to select a case that will accommodate the larger diameter of the shaft and butt which are a signature of Ron's cue building philosophy. Standard tube type cases may not work. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations on what would work best? Must accommodate the butt and two shafts with joint protectors. Thanks.
 
I received a PM from a member who recommended a 4X8 "butterfly" style case. I've found the following choices: Lucasi LC3 or LC5, Silverfox BR2, Sterling (not sure of model). Any thoughts or suggestions? Will any/all of these work with a Kilby carom cue? Thanks.
 
I recently had a Kilby cue and it fit just fine in one of my tube cases, that was a 2x4. It wasn't a special case. Just one that I had bought on ebay a while ago. Although, your right to be concerned, as I've had a few cases that barely fit a standard pool cue butt. Why don't you wait until you get the cue and try the fit with a couple cases at your local pool hall? If you find one that fits and don't like the local price, then you can always mail order the same model online.
 
JB with Ultrpad or the other non-tube interior would work great. That said, I would think most non-tube cases would be fine.
 
I make my butt and joint perhaps a bit larger than the trends these days, and have had good luck with Whitten cases. I also make a 59" cue and that fits with joint caps (as long as they are not obscenely long!)

No flash; however very high quality and excellent durability (which is the name of the game after all).

The old 2X4 cases were made from sailboat mast stock. Literally, you could drive over the case and the cues would be perfect.

Not sure if this is still the case (so to speak) with them, but I also have a few 1X2 cases that are newer than my old 2X4 and am quite happy with them.

PS They can/will do fancier materials too if you want some *bling*...

PPS makes a fine weapon as well... I certainly would not want to be hit upside the head with a Whitten!
 
dogloose, I would agree with tiger37373, wait until you get the cue, then check cases. Two thing come to mind and you should consider.
1. Did you ask Kilby which case to use for his cue. Might not receive the answer you want.

2. Will you be using a Rubber grip on cue and will it stay or be remove from cue before storage in case.

Longoni or Predator Case might be your answer.

Thanks for the replies... FYI Ron suggested the Silverfox style case... I will have a silicone wrap on the cue and likely will not be removing it when it goes back in the case.

Since I now own a 2X4 Tube style case I will check the fit when the cue arrives... If it works wrap and all... well I don't really have a problem... If not... I will check out some of the suggestions...
 
Definitely wait!

Those over wraps generally are not all that thick; however they tend to stick really well to the 'fuzz' inside cue cases!

Once you have it try your case, but I think you may need a clam-shell type case for that cue with over wrap.

The silverfox is a nice case. I use it when I am hauling more than 2 butts around. Not fancy, but well make. There are no tubes so the case can actually be bent. So probably not as much protection but very light.
 
My Kilby cues fit fine in a 2x4 Giuseppe, but they aren't wrapped and I don't know if they'd fit if they were. I wouldn't want to drive a truck over it, but it's quite strong, stitching and zippers have had no problems over the seven or eight years I've had it, etc. I think I paid about $75 for it, and it looks like the same case is about $100 at Billiard Warehouse these days.

It's too bad J. W. Hager is going out of business. That's a case I'd really like to have.

Lots of good cases out there. If you want a nice leather case, you can't do better on quality, price and protection than http://www.jbcases.com. Ask for the ultrapad interior. My butt and shafts are larger than normal (I asked for the larger butt) and they fit with no problem. If you want bigger pockets for accessory crapola, he does it for no extra charge. Here's mine:

Whitten can surly help with with the rubber grip issue. He did it for me.

The Silver Fox is a nice inexpensive case that holds lots of cues. A lot of carom players use this butterfly style becaues of the rubber grip problem. Both JB and Jim Murnak make some very nice butterfly's. At least they look nice on their sites and we know they're both good craftsmen. I don't know what Mazin can do but he certainly has the contacts.
