I just picked up a brand new pole sander I am sure some on here know what they are, for you that don't its a sander you put a dowel, shaft or butt threw to sand the contour perfectly flat and smooth you feed it in from the right side and it comes out the left it takes less then 10 seconds to sand a shaft with n o waves in them at all! sand paper grits from 320 to 800 depending on what step you are doing with 600 or 800 grit you can sand finish in between coats perfectly flat every time!!! also do butts and shafts I must admit don't know how I got by without one. Will take some pictures and also plan on doing a short video showing how this works there are only 2 companies on the planet that make these, $ 3500.00 and about $5000.00 for the other. I looked for 3 years for a used one luckily I found one UN-used I have thought about making one and making it affordable too the cue maker thanks for reading ......Lee

I have not seen one of those since being at Bluds. Haven't heard anyone refer to a cue as a Pole since Blud either.:)

Those things are the nuts.

Round Pole Sander

Sherm Adamson of Shermcues has one and it's the Sunhill single belt. I've used this piece several times and it has saved me an endless amount of time, doing re-tapering repair on existing shafts. Any cuemaker would benefit from as inexspensive model, what are you comtemplating as a price point?

dowel sander

Hey, that looks just like mine. Don't see a dust hose hooked up.
Mine sounds like a locomotive when you start it up. They take a little while to get use to, but can do wonderful things.

Pole or dowel sander

I saw one work at Andy Gilberts shop. Was very easy to use and saved tons of time doing sanding. I think he had his setup to use only one kind of paper. It looked like a simple machine to make really. I didn't seem like they should cost as much as they do. I think it's basically just a belt sander turned up on end and a nice flat table to hold the work as you push it through and a wheel that you lean against to apply how much sanding pressure you wanted. I would be interested in one. I've been looking for a used one for a while now myself. Ready to just figure out how to make one.

Yeah, I have a Sundhill version. I've been using it for about 5 years and frankly from the time I got used to it, on, if someone were to steal it I'd be lost. When I was researching the purchase I spoke to Paul Mottey, Joey Gold and a few other cuemakers about them. The standard answer was "I'd quit cuemaking if I could no longer use the pole sander". I agree!

There's a little more to it than it looks like. You don't push the shaft through. The wheel doesn't just apply pressure, it's powered and controls the feed. It's adjustable so you can set the feed rate where it's most effective. You can also adjust the pressure. It has a built in dust collector you hook up to your shop dust collector and it takes all the dust out. They're pricey, but if you use one regularly you'll find it indispensible and well worth the cost. Not that I wouldn't have liked to have found a cheaper one, but waiting for a cheap one isn't as cost effective as it seems when you see the time and effort it saves you in the shop. It's really the nuts for retapering a shaft or taking one down. No need to replace the tip, it's a centerless sanding machine.
