New Shaft

So I have been playing with wood all my life and have used many tips over the years Moorie’s being some of the best and my cue maker does some amazing Milk Duds. That being said I took a number of years off and have been back a little over a year. I have tried the Kamui Clear Black Medium and those are awful, tried a couple others like Tiger Sniper that I just don’t care for and ultimately settled on the Taom Pro Soft which I really like.

I ordered the Cuetec Cynergy 11.8 it will be here on Tuesday and I’m wondering what type of tip do you other CF players use? I have heard great things about the Zan Soft and How Soft and have been told a little softer tip is better for CF. Worst case I will go back to the old school Milk Duds my cue maker makes.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations and I also know tips are a preference and no 1 tip is right for everyone so just looking for your tip selection and why.

Also does anyone know the tip hardness or a Taom Pro Medium and Soft?

You’re right it doesn’t matter what others use but since I’m switching to CF from wood then having conversations with others about pros and cons to what they use is totally fine. You are more than welcome to make tips out of belts if you want and you are more than welcome to not comment at all if you don’t have any productive input.

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that ping.

I like milk duds on my cf. It really is preference, there's nothing magic about cf and tip selection.

I 100% agree and I have a certain feel I’m shootinf for so to speak. My CF will not arrive till Tuesday and I will likely go thru a few tips till I find what’s right for me. The Taom and HOW tips I can’t find on a hardness scale to compare to others. I have over 40 years of playing and have been thru lots of tips so all I’m looking for really is feedback since I am new to CF and I know the hit feels different.

Comparing tips can(will???) lead you down a costly rabbit hole. Most cf shafts tend to produce a faster/hotter hit so 'in general' a softer tip is often the better choice. I had a med. Ultraskin on a Rhino that hit great. Tried a couple harder ones and the cb just came off way too hot.

I've found that a lot of people using CF mention using a softer tip so there's gotta be something to it. I can understand the logic, but I like really hard tips. To me, the hotter/harder tip feels like I can get any spin I want and never leave a dime radius from center. The softer the tip gets I feel like I have to start going out more on the CB. Who knows, it likely may all be in my head. I tried softer on CF and I just didn't like it. It felt like I was sacrificing some performance for comfort. Like putting Cadillac/Lincoln shocks on a sports car.

I really enjoy the feeling of never leaving center ball and just spinning the heck out of the CB if needed (not all that often). I've heard people call it "pinning the CB." I feel like the hard tip lets me do that, even on soft/finesse type shots. I like a nice ping, where a well struck ball almost sounds like a miscue to the untrained ear. The hit I'm talking about isn't a miscue but with a light grip you can hear the shaft/cue sing a bit. Kielwood has a nice sound on these hits.

There was some dude on the sidelines at a local tournament that was talking to his friend about how I how I kept miscuing. I ignored it since he was just a railbird, but it was no miscues. Just a hard tip putting a stroke to the ball with a really light grip. It sounded lively but there was no miscue on a medium pace shot at 1/2 a tip from center cue ball.

But once again, preference is a huge thing. I'm sure some people would be drove absolutely batty with my preferences and I'd be ready for a padded cell with their preferences. I like your thoughts on a medium, it can work for anyone and is a great starting point. It's easier to tell if you want harder or softer with that a baseline, but I think a medium is the sweet spot for many.

I totally get it I love that sound, I shoot with a Taom Medium right now and it’s on the harder side of medium tips and I love it. I have a friend that knows SVB and the HOW Medium was recommended to me by him, so might give that a shot and go from there. I may end up right back at my Taom Mediums lol.

The $ isn’t an issue, I mean I cut off like 6 tips before I found Taom Pro Mediums. I don’t feel it’s a waste if you are in search for the tip you are one with.

I am using a Kamui Super Soft which i know you won't like.

But i can make a suggestion. CF is a bit stiffer of a hit. I do reccomend going down a step on tip hardness. Medium to Soft or hard to Medium etc. to get the same hit feel.

If you like Taom Mediums I would go with a Taom Soft as a starting point. If it feel to soft go for a medium. But i feel you might like the soft

Play with the shaft for a bit with whatever tip it comes with using your own unique playing style. Observe what is happening with your eyes, ears & hands. Then and only then can you figure out what direction to go with a new tip.

The only opinion that matters is yours.

never found a tip i was 'one with'. that's funny.
I have had a couple over the years, every now and then you find that perfect feel. In the past it was the original Moori’s and my cue makers milk duds. Now I’m using the Taom Pro not perfect but pretty nice. So moving to CF it’s uncharted waters so I’m on that hunt. SVB suggested HOW medium since I shoot on 9ft’ers mostly so that will be my starting point most likely.

I know I don’t like the Tiger Sniper and I have a friend that has a Zan soft on his. I appreciate the suggestions.

Thanks Taom is on the harder side and I like that so if I don’t like the HOW Medium I will go try the Taom Pro Soft. Thank you for your input and suggestion and yes Kamui SS is way to soft for me.

The How black medium is a great tip and i love the hit of Cadien tips as well.
I went with the HOW Medium at the suggestion of SVB and I’m in love with this shaft/tip combo. It’s great on 9’ tables as well as the 7’s. I’m still adjusting to left/right spin but center/top/bottom plus the lack of deflection is amazing. My 1st 3 matches with it I had 4 break and runs and 3 table runs so the more I play with it the better things will get.

Thanks everyone for recommendations.
