New Tournament Series - GA., FL. & SC.
Greetings all!
First off - I have been reading the board and AZBilliards.com for several days now and have LEARNED alot. Lots of information to absorb.
Secondly - We are starting a Tournament Series for the everyday pool player and as we develop the series, I wish to gather opinions from players and seek their input.
Pro players will be encouraged not to play, since we are building this Series for the "everyday" player. There are other Tours the Pros can play. We don't know how we are going to regulate this, but we are open for suggestions.
The series will consist of Open Singles and Open Doubles 8-Ball and 9-Ball utilizing a double elimination format so the players will get the most "bang for their buck" and be able to have an off game without being eliminated right away. 9-Ball will be a race to 3, until the finals of each tournament series - then it shall be a race to 5.
The format will utilize local qualifiers held at bars, taverns, pool halls and billiard centers to advance players to a Regional Tournament where they'll qualify to advance to the Championship. In the beginning we will have 4 Regionals, with 64 Qualifers per Region. The winners from each Qualifier, plus a certain amount of Wild Cards (Non-Winning Qualifier Players chosen at random) advance to the Regionals. From each Regional - the top 16 finishers + 16 Wild Cards advance to the Championship to compete for up to $30,000 in cash & prizes.
I'll post more info over the weekend when all the details have been worked out - but I have a few questions:
1) To make it affordable for the "everyday" player, we will have a two-tiered entry fee. To participate in the Local Qualifier there is a $20 Entry Fee, then if the player advances to the Regionals they pay an additional $20. Our thinking was $20 is affordable, and should the player not qualify at that time - it would be affordable for them to try again. At the same time - everyone doesn't have to pay $30 or $40 just to attempt to qualify.
What are your thoughts?
2) We are starting with 4 regionals to keep it small enough to manage since we are just beginning. The 4 will be: Jacksonville, Florida area; Savannah, Georgia area; South Atlanta, Georgia area and North Atlanta, Georgia area. The Championship will be in Savannah, Georgia for the first time around. I see no problems with players that qualify for a Regional to travel 30 or 40 miles to compete - my question is - will the 32 players that advance from the Regionals in these cities, drive 3+ hours to compete in the Championships?
What are your thoughts?
Well - this thread is long enough - I'll seek more opinions on other topics later. I truly value your thoughts and input. Nothing is in stone yet, we are open for ideas.
Thanks -
Tom
