Could care less myself. I do it sometimes. My APA league doesnt allow it though.
I am not sure why, but I find it to be exceptionally irritating.. I've played a few people with mp3 players, and its irritating as hell to have to talk to them, only to have them give you a stupid look... Then wait for them to pause their music, pull out one of their ear phones (Becuase god knows what you have to say isn't important enough to hear it with both ears) only to give you a nod, and put their headphones back in..
Pool is suppose to be somewhat social isn't it?
I played Jaden from here once and he had one on.. Kinda irritating, but atleast he kept the volume low enough to know when someone was talking to him..
The last guy I played with I wanted to strangle him with the headphone chord. Doesn't much matter though I ended up robbing him anyways.

They do what they want to, if they don't unplug to talk to you it's about as rude as wearing sunglasses while talking to you.
It's irritating sometimes, but not the end of the world. I can't believe they don't allow that in the APA where you are, isn't that a violation of some amendment?

I dunno, I guess I'm one of those guys that likes to say something like
"Nice shot on that 5 ball" after the racks over and things like that.. Just seems so impersonal to have head phones on while playing somebody. To clarify though, just becuase I think it's rude, doesn't mean I won't play.
I've also had a situation where I'm playing somebody and they are talking on their cell phone and putting it down in between shots.. I think that's rude as well.

Wearing headphones is certainly not sociable, but I play quite a few players I would rather not to socialize with. Maybe I should buy those players a cheap MP3 player so I won't have to listen to their bs. As long as the rest of a players pool room etiquette is ok, I could care less if they listen to music, but from my experience, a lack of etiquette seems to go hand in hand with the headphones.

In my personal experience, I find my senses are very accute when I'm in the "Zone"; I feel like I can hear the rail birds whispering. If they say a sentence with my name, or I hear my name mentioned when I am down on a shot it distracts me. Sometimes I even find complements a distraction. For instance, I was playing in a local 9-ball tourney (race to 3, double elimination), and matched up against a very good player. I guess I was scared to miss because I broke and ran the first 2 racks. On the 3rd rack, I was straight in on the seven ball and the eight and the nine ball was hangers. When I was getting down to shoot the 7 ball, right when I was about to pull the trigger, I overheard my apponent whispering to one of his friends that I play like a champion. Hearing his complement caused me to miss cue and miss the 7-ball; fortunately, the seven ball rolled right behind the 8 where he couldn't make it.
I find listening to music while shooting pool lessens my anxiety. "They" say that listening to classical music while reading inhances your comprehension. Maybe listening to classical music while shooting pool might enhance you concentration. Again, this is just my opinion and I would be very interested in hearing from people who listen to music while they play.

I just starting playing with my ipod and I have to say it help me with retaining focus in the game. I got in the habit of chatting with the railbirds or them talking to me while i'm playing. This has cut down that distaction a ton. But i also understand some people may be offended if i don't respond.
It does not bother me when my oppenent uses a mp3 player. I have contemplated getting one myself. I noticed a good player from PA who put in ear plugs while he was in the finals of a match. I dont think a mp3 player should be a big deal as long as I keep the volume down.

Several good points....I have had someone in the gallery clearly announce my full name while on my final approach to the cue ball....you can pick your own name being mentioned out of a crowd very easily....I missed the shot. I don't believe it was intentional sharking, I think it was simply bad manners...but it got me thinking of using earplugs or an MP3 player. I think the point made about keeping it low enough to hear your opponent is a good one also, in case they want to question your shot or get a referee.

What ever calms them. I do it sometimes shwn I'm practicing but not when I'm playing someone. If they do it to me I actually don't mind, what ever keeps them from distraction. Besides, if they don't want to talk then leave em alone. Why bother the guy?

Good soothing music to listen to when playing pool, at least it helps me: Pink Floyd, Engima, The Doors, Alan Parsons Project.

i love my ipod, but i can't listen to it and play pool at the same time.
The music is distracting (want to dance and sing along- even with the classical i know the melodies and instruments).
Just as important: i can't hear the hit of the cue, the balls clicking together, or the rails.

and a lot of rooms play horrid loud music for the "weekend" players. i'll use my player then, to drown out the room music. but it also seems to boil down to,,,as long as the player's mind isn't somewhere else...like you have to keep reminding him it's his turn or something, then what's the diff.
cuz if the player is totally mindful of the game, and you're still annoyed, then you're psyching your own self out, not him.
