Phenolic tip install?

Here's a quick question... Do you recommend installing a fibre pad with a phenolic tip? I plan to install a phenolic tip on an old shaft for breaking and I was wondering if i need the pad to protect the ferrule? The ferrule is not phenolic, just the tip...

It's not required. Both the ferrule and tip need to be faced off perfectly flat, and use a high quality glue. If it's a cheap ferrule material you may run into some trouble. You can score the back of the tip with a razor blade, which some feel helps hold it on.

The only tips I have had pop off in the past 5 or so years were phenolic with a fibre pad. I wouldn't recommend using one.
