POC orders election in billiards, snooker
THE executive board of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has stepped into the never-ending leadership clash in the Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines (BSCP).
After hearing the grievances echoed by the disgruntled board of directors of the BSCP and billiards players and coaches, the POC ordered the group to hold an election before the end of the month.
POC President Jose “Peping” Cojuangco said the BSCP already identified its voting members after the group sent its official list last week to the Olympic body. He also said the list was already reviewed by the Olympic body.
“As the official list of voting members already was identified and passed for review by the POC [and] the BSCP election should take place immediately so not to jeopardize our athletes’ massive buildup and preparation in major tournaments abroad,” said Cojuangco.
Billiards national players are currently in training for Southeast Asian Games in Laos on December.
Cojuangco said the POC is acting only on the request made by the majority of BSCP directors, headed by original member Arturo ‘Bong’ Ilagan, who appealed to the POC for an election.
Ilagan said the majority of billiards and snookers players are calling for the immediate ouster of current BSCP Chairman Yen Makabenta and President Ernie Fajardo due to alleged corruption and massive “misinformation drive.”
“It’s not the POC but us, the majority of BSCP directors, with the support of our top players, who are calling for an election to end the four years of misruling by Makabenta and Fajardo,” said Ilagan, a pioneer member of the BSCP.
“It’s been four years since the last election we had, and it is about time to give our constituents a chance to select their leaders,” said Ilagan. “We are thankful the POC allowed it [election] to happen.”
Based on the by-laws of BSCP, an election should take place every four years or during the year when an Olympics is staged.
The Manila Times tried to contact Makabenta and Fajardo to get their sides, but both could not be reached.
