I don't think they just look at the tournament results for that, but maybe how dominant the player was. I don't think anyone put fear into the opponent as much as Earl did in his prime. Sure it was tough to beat Sigel, but I bet more players shit their pants when they had to think about playing Earl. It's a bit like Efren, he may not have as many titles as other players you would compare him to, but he sure is regarded as the best of all time and for good reason.

Efren does have more titles than pretty much any other player though, thus the more titles the better player.

Also if it was based on fear Efren would have won player of the decade in the 90s, without a doubt.

Tough one to call,

At the end of the day, thinking about it, it’s a toss up. Mike was out of the gate a few years earlier than Earl, they overlapped some for a few years then Mike retired at 39 years old. Earl kept playing.

Who played better? Mikes answer, not mine. “About the same, Earl had that high gear in 9 ball-forget about it”.

I think Mike should have won. It looks like Earl became more dominant towards the end of the decade which seems like it might have resulted in a recency bias. I always felt like Mika getting awarded player of the decade in the 00s was a similar recency bias due to his form in 2008-2010.

A lot of people thought Souquet or Efren were the player of the decade in the 2000s.

Sigel by just a little bit. He was the transition, and showed everyone what high-caliber 9-ball was all about.

For the period of 1980 - 1989 Sigel. Earl sits in a weird space having been truly dominant between the 80s and 90s but not throughout both decades IMO, with Mike “retiring” around that in between time. It’s really a timing issue for me. Both these guys were as tough a draw as you could get in their primes.

Sigel retired in 1994 at 41 years old. Made a short comeback four years late winning the first tournament he entered, the 1998 French Open 9-Ball.

There is no doubt sigel was the best all around tournament player world wide anyone has seen perhaps since Mosconi days! Incredible consistent and played all games to a echelon level. Just ask Efren.
