I think there have been a couple of threads on this lately, but ...
don't think anybody asked specifically if there were decent pool rooms in any of the city's walkable nabes.

Probably be in town for a few days next month. Not sure where I'm staying yet, so how close can I get to a decent room from either downtown or maybe Central West End, U City, etc.???

Damn, this a tough room! And maybe you can tell me what is Pond Scum???:D

Seriously, I'm probably not going to rent a car, so I'm looking to stay in some neighborhood where you can walk to things, maybe even to a pool hall, or at least find one a short cab ride away.

If you stay in downtown you can take a short cab ride to "The Break" in Cahokia, IL. which is across the mississippi river. Probably cost you 20 bucks at the most. There may be a room that is easier to access but probably not much action. Watchez can help you out here.

Sure I can help out.

First of all Pond Scum is what Cardinal fans called the NY Mets in the Mid-80's. It was started by shock jock JC Corcoran, fueled by a good rivalry between two good teams. Increased, when Keith Cocaine Hernandez got shipped to the NY Mets for Neil 'the worst trade the Cardinals Ever Made" Allen.

Second-There are not any pool rooms in a neighborhood you can walk to. St Louis is not that kind of town. There are bars with bar tables, but that is it. If you stay in the Central West End or U City/Loop Area you can take the Metro Link across the river to the Casino Queen & then a cab from there to The Break in Cahokia. That would be your cheapest route. Not sure what time the Metro Link closes down. I am sure you can do a google search & find that out. During the day, you can take the Metro Link in the other direction to the Airport & then take a cab from there to Cue N Cushion billiards. Also has a website, you can google that too. That is the main daytime pool room with lots of regulars who play their regular games. There are a few younger players that would most likely match up a game with you. Craig, one of the owners of Cue N Cushion, posts on AZ regularly. Nice guy, nice family owned business. Large assortment of cues. Nicer ones you have to ask him to bring out from their hiding spots. South County is home of Sportscenter & Ride the Rail. No Metro Link to there but you can get some action if you like.

Also, not sure what your preferance is (using the word nabes has me wondering), but if you stay in the Central West End it is also known as the Central Rear End. Large gay community. Here is a free tip for you--bars that don't have a sign over the door are gay bars. They have straight bars in that area also.

Watchez, thanks for the info. Hadn't been around St. Louis much since the days when the mighty Pond Scum briefly rose to the top. In fact, I was at all 4 of the games in April 86 when Mex and the boys swept the Redbirds, a month before Whitey conceded the pennant!

Nabes sounds funny? What can I tell you, it's a useful headline word if you work at a tabloid. Along with nix, hosp, slay, nab, bust ...

Might play some if I see anybody as lousy as me, lol.

Drink @ TheBreak, none of the other rooms I stated. Do a search on posts by jwilliams here on AZ. He had a nice post a lil while back on the breakdown of all the St Louis rooms & what to expect. It was right on board.

Not sure if it is still there. Actually called Mac's place. Obviously no action.

Unfortunately Fat Bill passed away a few years back. He was one of the best.

Watchez, where in Brooklyn are you from?

Anyway, sounds like I might as well rent a car. Could do my boozing after I get back from making my donations. Just hate the counting and driving routine ... not just the beers, but trying to remember to count to 3 at a stop sign, lol.

And thanks for the tip on jwilliams ... plenty of stuff to work with from that thread.

Hell, I just checked out link to Mark Wilson's Redbird lounge ... jeez, I'm gonna hear it wearing Mets gear in there. And no doubt there's a Yadier Molina jersey hanging somewhere by now.
