If you want to reserve your room for the Expo next year 3/10/2011-3/13/2011, the Radisson is now making people pay in advanced at the time you book it and it is non-refundable.

I know this is not possible for some people. People like myself spent a ton of cash and do not have the money at the moment to reserve, but do not want to wait and possibly not get a room there. Also I dont want to book now and be out 500 if something unexpected were to happen at the time of the Expo next year.

This is the first time they have implemented this and it seems pretty shitty.

I recommend commenting about it here:

Could possibly have this changed if they receive enough negative feedback on it.

Apparently, there is some kind of major policy change for the Radisson, at KOP. I'm guessing that the "Valley Forge Shuffle", that is, the constant changing of room reservations i.e. ppl reserving extra rooms, selling their reservations, etc, prompted this decision. The only way you can reserve a room is to announce that you are part of the Super Billiards Expo group. If not, then they tell you that "no rooms are available for those dates".

I hope they relax the policy, but as of now, the only reprieve is to complain.

Eric >or stay elsewhere

Me no like!!

Yeah I found out Sunday morning when I was leaving. I spoke with Allen about it and he indicated it was because of people canceling etc. Someone else overheard me registering my disapproval and that person told me they did the same thing at the Derby City Classic. I've always believed that "it just isn't as fun if you're not staying at the Radisson" but I'm starting to re-think this perspective. It is true that I'm always going back and forth from my room to the Expo either to use my own bathroom, or to get some beers, or to watch a little March Madness or just to take a break. But this new policy has me really thinking about getting a cheap Embassy Suites place nearby for a cheaper price and more amenities. But let's be honest here--> the best amenity is really the distance from the room to the Expo. Darn I don't know what I'll do but my next step is getting one of my 3 roomates to pay the upfront fee so I don't have to...........yeah good luck with that. :D

another option is...

to stay 1/4 mile down the road at Clarion Park Ridge (formerly Sheraton) and take advantage of their shuttle bus that runs about every 15 minutes. Nice rooms, $98.50 per night, and a hell of a breakfast buffet.

I must admit, though, there is a certain appeal to walking up to your room to cool out for some March Madness or to use your own bathroom. I mentioned in my SBE wrap up post that the public bathrooms were disgusting.

Also, funny as could be: I was playing one of my matches Saturday afternoon when over the PA comes an announcement that people who have removed cushions from their rooms must resturn them right away or they will be charged for them. This announcement was repeated two or three times. Hillarious! What were people doing with these cushions?

Did anyone else hear this announcement?

If you can't afford it, will your roommates come up with their piece up front?
Personally I've been out of work a long time with no prospects and I think I'll have less money a year from now and would just as soon pay up front while I'm sure I've got it. Also if it eliminates the possibility of not getting what I reserved or getting my reservation canceled because I arrived a little late, I'm good with the policy.

Sounds fine to me...

Thanks Kickin' Chicken....I was not aware of the shuttle option....is the Park Ridge left out of Expo....there used to be one there I remember.....what times do shuttles run to? Is there a fitness center at Park Ridge? This pre-payment at Radisson sucks man. I ain't paying up front if I can help it. Is there a frigde/couch in the rooms? Must admit it sounds doable!! Thanks for the tip!!:)

The VF Raddison has the worst customer service of any establishment I've ever been to (PERIOD) I hope the event moves to AC so I can be done with that S#@t hole once and for all.

Guys,

Stayed a couple of nights at the Sleep Inn off First St. Less than a mile away. $77.00 per night with a continental breakfast. When you consider the Motel Six is only $8.00 less per night. The place was clean, safe and professionally run.

Ok.....I'm not a world traveler, and motels are not a part of my everyday lifestyle.......BUT.....I have never seen a deposit that was not refundable with appropriate advance notice...(usually 30 days). Is this a Raddison policy across the board,or did the local owner see a way to screw SBE in advance?......who in the F**K ever heard of a 1 year non refundable deposit? You can reserve rooms for the superbowl a year in advance...but the deposit is refundable untill 30 days prior to arrival.....SBE can't possibly overwhelm VF hotels to the extent that a deposit should be held....just my $.02....but this is a pisser.......Dan

Yes you must not travel much. This is an extreme case but there are plenty of 'non refundable rates' out there. Hotwire offers no refunds once booked and plenty of other hotels have a flexible rate and a non refundable rate. The non refundable is usually 10% cheaper or so but if you have to cxl, good bye cash.

I just had a buddy call me complaining that the rooms went from $130/night this yr to $154/night next yr. Between the insistence of pre payment and the rate hike, he won't be going next yr. His funds are too tight to pre pay and fade the rate hike.

Part of the expo experience for him involves alcohol and he isn't going to drive to another hotel after he has been drinking at the expo. Not drinking at the expo will alter his expo routine which he finds is quite enjoyable the way it is and he doesn't want to change that. He would rather skip it altogether. Maybe I can talk him into spending his expo money at the DCC instead.

Pre pay 600 big ones, thats too much for me even spliting it. Looks like Allen better start getting on this now or it may bite him in the butt in the long run.well guess i won't be going for more then 1 day.

Boycott the Radisson not the SBE

Good day to all,
Personally I agree with all the complaints, bad customer service, filthy bathrooms, not enough help to clean the garbage cans, the stench in the basement and so on. When we inquired about booking next year and heard the news, the manager (with a few choice names for him) said 'We know people want them and will fill the rooms.' What an arogant response. I would like to see everyone boycott the Radisson and stay nearby. What is everyones opinion on letting Allen know how we all feel about the situation and the conditions? I have been going for about 12 yrs now and hate to give it up, but will if this continues.
Thanks

I have stayed at the Dolce and this year I stayed at the Best Western on South Gulph Rd across Dekalb from the Mall. Both are nice and fairly cheap.

There has to be a reason for this no?
I mean some expos and shows do this. Notorious in Chicago's Mcormick area.
It has to be that there is a lot of cancellation (No good credit card and less than day before cancellation) or some other bad moves done on customers part.

For those who were good and behaving customer, this has to suck.
Not in hotel business but I do goto a lot of shows and expos.

From the hotel's side, if they have a room open, they will sell it somehow.
I've never been to SBE, heck didn't even know about it till last month. I wish to go someday. Another thing they can do, SBE that is, to start looking at other venues. It was a big news when NPE decided to move to Orlando when Chicago was too expensive and vendors started to complain. Some cities will negotiate with hotels and convention center to get many people to their cities for a weekend. Then they can go back to the city to get everything done right.

I'm sorry, don't know the history with SBE so this post could sound like uninformed and stupid. If it did, I apologize. I'm trying to learn, but wanted to chime in from my experience.

Not stupid at all, just a little uninformed. Allen Hopkins doesn't live too far from this event and I would imagine it is a much easier task to tackle when you live close to it. Much like Greg Sullivan wanting the DCC close to where he lives. Its a matter of much needed convenience I would think.

Another issue is that anywhere else in the area will be even more expensive. The more north you go, the more the prices (for everything) goes up. The only way he could make it happen cheaper, if I'm not mistaken, would be to move it down to certain parts of VA or into NC. Anything from MD upwards would more than likely cost the same and or more.
