Pro Taper: How long?

I just bought a new cue with a 9-10 inch pro taper. I thought a pro taper should be about 12 inches.

Any opinions on this?

That seems awfully short to me...I agree, 12 inches or so is about average. Seems like most players today are using a longer bridge than in times past, so maybe the conventional length needs to increase? Maybe the maker was keeping the shaft a little stiffer? I like my pro tapers much longer than that...16 to 20 inches...the Gulyassy SPTX I have has about a 20 inch pro taper, I love it. My Schon shafts are about 16 inches, but I had them pulled back a little several years ago...they were about 12-14 inches, IIRC.

I think it just depends on how gradual the change is where the pro taper ends. I have a shaft that the change is quite abrupt and it's very noticeable on longer reach shots.

Yeah, there is no real consistency on pro taper length. It varies by cuemaker. I generally consider a pro taper to be 12+ inches. Some cuemakers go longer to 15 or more inches. Anything shorter than 12 inches in taper I tend to not like as much. It would be nice if all cuemakers could agree on a standard length of taper as the pro taper. So all of us buyers truly understood what it is we are getting when we order a pro taper shaft. But that is probably a too diffulcult task to get done, considering that nearly all the best cuemakers are members of the American Cuemakers Association.
