Pros Breaking off the side on the 1 for real?

Wowza. Thanks!

So is this a thing that might trend into normal play even when there is no break box? Or too risky letting the cue fly if you can break from the rail? Has anyone seen it spreading

Thanks again!

I watched a video about a month ago demonstrating that break and I’ve been using it ever since. I’ve seen a significant increase in making the nine on the break. I’ve still got a long way to go to perfect this break but I’m consistently making at least one ball on the break. Most of my nine balls have been made in the bottom corner pockets rather than the side pockets as most of the pros did. I’m also tending to leave the cue ball down on that end, often resulting in a poor shot on the one ball. That’s been the biggest drawback for me so far but it can really make your opponent nervous when you roll that nine toward a pocket on nearly every break.

Ok, is it possible at the end of this clip the players breaking from the box are playing the cue ball off the rail toward the 9? Not sure I believe thats actually a thing. Just checking.
This is most certainly an “actual thing.” This and other 9 ball break techniques and tricks, some ethical and some not, are summarized in the following recent BD article:

"How to Rack and Break 9-Ball Like a Pro" (BD, March, 2018).

Video demonstrations of many of the techniques and tricks can be found here:

9-ball break strategy

pattern racking and ball-gapping strategy

Enjoy,

The clip is half "Lucky" slop shots and last half are 9 ball breaks at the 2017 US Open.

That has been around for a bit, not super well known but I have seen a few players talk about it, break to send the cueball through the rack area again to send the 9 ball moving.

Someone a while ago posted that he saw (I think) SVB playing Duel, SVB broke like that, made the 9 and Duel said "nice shot", which prompted the person to post and ask about it.
