Recon Ivory?

I have seen some production cues advertising "recon ivory" being used as buttcaps and inlays. What is recon ivory?

There is an alternative ivory thats made by mascrafft from england it looks great and is stronger in the use of a butt cap

Thank you for the reply. I kinda figured it was another "non-ivory" ivory.

i'm not an expert, but I believe it's powdered and crushed ivory and sintered back to a solid piece...hence recon for reconstituted. think like particle board for wood

I have a cue that has an alternative ivory butt cap. Be nice to know where you can get a large enuff piece in solid or hollow rod. I've seen the AI in woodworkers forums. The butt cap is actually quite nice.

Masecraft sells both joint and butt size. I am building a segmented handle cue right now that I intended to use Masecrafts alternate ivory for joint, butt cap and all deco-rings. I ordered it in and and made up five butt size deco-rings, one including the butt cap but found it to be very fragile and chips very easily. I ended up making them over out of Aegis.

Alternative ivory is anything that looks like ivory but is not.

Like MChen posted ... reconstituted ivory is made using particles of ivory.

Chop a piece of ivory into small blocks and it is still ivory.
Grind it up like coffee grounds and it is still ivory.
Sand it to a fine powder and it is still ivory.
Mix any of the above with epoxy and you have made "reconstituted" ivory.

Some inlays are done this way ... fine particles of ivory mixed with resin and packed into the inlay pocket.
Mostly used on the very small ivory inlays that would be difficult to cut a solid ivory piece.

It is very brittle IMO, I have butt and joint sizes and have tried it and it cracks and chips very easily. Sands great though:D
