sampaio plaza cue

i recently purchased a sampaio plaza cue. looks like a rosewood sneaky with a brass joint, black but cap, ivory(unsure) ring. has ivory ferrul and 6 mop circles in butt. 1 large and 5 smaller ones. has reddish bumper.is in ok shape. needs a lil work. has some bumps and bruises and the joint collar is a little loose. it has sampaio and made in portugal on the forearm. is it worth anything or worth fixing?

Sampios have a limited following for collectors - but there is some interest.

IMHO - the thing that hurts them most is there are about
a million and 5 cheap Taiwan knockoffs from the 60s - 70s.

They're interesting and possibly collectible, to the right person. IIRC Palmer imported the cues back in the 60's and may have had something to do with helping the company.

I purchased my Sampaio "Lancer" - one piece mahogany butt with mop dots at the bottom - earlier this year on e-bay for $85 as a lark from the original owner who purchased it back in the early 60's - didn't know much about them at the time but love mahogany - long ferrule - brass joint - like yours has "sampaio and made in portugal" stamped on the butt and also on the shaft -

Since the shaft was slightly warped I had a new one made to match exactly right down to the brass joint/long ferrule (kept the original of course) - didn't have to do anything with the butt no bumps or bruises - weight is just under 18 oz and balance and feel is phenomenal - it's my regular cue and wouldn't part with it for anything -

According to the Blue Book your "Plaza" model is worth $400 for 98% - $275 for 90% - and $200 for 70% - original retail for yours was a whopping $25!!! - mine beat yours for $28!!! - lol

FYI - Sampaio was a family owned and operated business who made three-cushion billiard cues from 1880 to the mid '70's specializing in exotic hardwoods and had an excellent reputation throughout Europe.
