Schon Cues

Does anyone on here collect Schon cues? If so I'd love to see pics (yes for my own selfish reasons..LOL). So, if you have the time...show off those Schon cues.

Also, I know a lot of collectors are very particular about sharp points versus rounded points. Like I said, I'm a player but don't know a heck of a lot about cue making/selection/etc. I was always focused on the "hit" with brief regard for the look (but not from a collecting point of view). TATE made a point to me yesterday about buying cues with sharp points versus rounded. What is the difference and why does it make a difference in the collectibility? I see that some older Schons have sharp points and newer ones are all rounded. Obviously this is due to some technique for cutting out the points...oh hell, I'm rambling. All of you experts, please fill me in.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This cue is a beauty and is well worth the opening bid and more:

I already have one just like it. It would be rarer with the stitch rings. This is an R-12, about 1987.

here's a r-14 that i've had since 1984. this cue has stiched rings and is the only one to have been made with onyx dots at the top of the points. 1 shaft is all original and the other two shafts were made in 1988 by schon with the same stiched ringwork.

schon shaft ?

what does a schon shaft with the stich rings go for in excellent condition right at 13mm or a little over with a schon joint protector and no bluing

If it's original from the 1980's and it's straight, about $175. Schon will still make them but it won't have the linen phenolic - just solid plastic.

Chris

ps. That R-14 is a beauty. I've always liked that design. I have one too but not with the stitch rings (and no dots, of course).

Here's some stuff I was working on. I was thinking about building a Schon collector site - to help bring collectors together. I could tell that Schon wasn't too thrilled when I proposed the idea, so I scrapped it.

I think it is a great start. I'm curious why Schon would be against it (Evan Clarke I suppose?)? It will only promote Schon cues.

I thought the same thing.

Evan is very generous with his knowledge. He made many of the old cues too. He's very particular about accuracy and he is very busy (he makes all the cues himself). I would need his help with the site because he has so much knowledge and information. He doesn't have the time to contribute, and really doesn't want inaccurate information supplied. He has not been happy with similar efforts in the past. Schon has made a ton of different models over the years - mind boggling, really.

Evan now "is" Schon and it's just the right thing to do to respect his wishes. He's been very helpful in providing info. The little work I did do I let stay on the web without pushing it. He's seen it with no objection so I didn't delete the pages.

Hi Matt, here are a few Schon cues for you to enjoy. The first year Schon is one that I just had refinished by Evan and the boys. A few of these cues I no longer have and I feel a little sick about it after looking at these pics. :(
But anyways, hope you enjoy them....

Are the Schon cues featured on your site from *your* collection?

I don't collect them, but I have a plain 4-pt, 4-veneer, ebony into maple first year (1981) with brown phenolic rings. It's got its original finish and wrap.

No, those are all scans of catalogs and ads. The front page photo is from a friend's collection. "Hunter" right here in A-Z (Steve) sent me a lot of material too.

I have a nice collection of early Schons but I haven't put them on the site.

Hi Fred,

That's a nice historic keeper. I forgot the really early ones had the brown phenolic linen collars.

They used a lot of genuine ivory for the ferrules too as well as the old yellow micarta.

I know they don't make the old yellow micarta anymore. Do you know why?

I always thought that "yellow micarta" was originally white, and it turned yellow with age. Maybe the folks at Westinghouse figured out a way to prevent it from yellowing.
