Selling Cues on Ebay

I get "paid" too, but I can't access the money until they receive it and leave feedback. It's locked up in my account and says it's "pending". I think it's like Type says, I don't have enough transactions or something. I have 100% positive feedback too.

How many transactions have you had for the 100%?

Key words only go so far. And often people misspell them or don't even know or use them.

Just search all used cues as a category, with a blank search field. Scroll fast, read the headings and glance at the pictures.

Sporting Goods > Indoor Games > Billiards > Cues Used x

Ever seen a JOSS spelled Josh? Or Juss? I have, many times. In fact there are so many things listed wrong it will blow your mind. How about Scruggs spelled with one "g"? And those are the simple names! LOL! Think of how the long names are butchered!

I have even found cues listed somewhere outside sporting goods!

I once bought a MINT CONDITION 1975 Honda CB500T with all the original records back to the day it was purchased plus the original matching helmet for $100 on Ebay because it was listed wrong so nobody saw it that might want it but me! It was 30 minutes from my house. I went and picked it up and cut in half to build a chopper. LOL!

Another example?
There is an an Adam A/H-46 Saturn that was listed as a Sampaio. They were darned lucky it made it up to $152 after they added that it might be an Adam, but they still typed it as "Adam A/H model 46 saturn" which is wrong.

Also, don't search for "best match", search for "newly listed". Then you'll be the first to see the Meucci Original at a Buy It Now price of $50.

I do have my additional tricks for key word searches but I am not giving them up. Well, not yet anyway.

There are other sites besides Ebay too, each with their own ways to find deals that typical cue shoppers will not see.

When you search Craigslist do you search "que stick"? You should. People often list cues that way that know nothing about them or what they are worth, that's why they list them wrong!

There are numerous other sites. I have a three monitor setup. I have multiple tabs open on multiple sites right now looking at cues. Want a JOSS Sneaky for $75? One available right now. Want a very early leather It's George tube case for $75? One is available right now. Want Brunswick Titlists for under $100 each? Available right now. (No, I am not going to post where.)

Then there are alternative search engines that don't use Google. You get different results.

And then there is Ebay Canada. I have bought cues cheap there. And Ebay UK. I have bought them from there as well. Sometimes people who list there include the US in their listing, but very often they don't!

I bought my refurb laptop on Ebay Canada. It was not listed on the US Ebay site. Got it cheap. I just contacted them first to ask if they would ship to the US. They said "of course".

I am sure some others around here know these things as well as I do.

You've identified a big part of the problem. A lot of people just don't know how to bypass the tens of thousand of new items.

A new "Blue Book" needs to be published with even crazier pricing than the first three.

If I were going to try making a business out out of selling cues on ebay, I'd focus on flipping used
Meucci and McDermott. (Maybe Predator)

They still do well.

Back when I first started collecting cues, ebay was a treasure chest for buying and selling cues. When I ran an auction, 500 to 1,000 page views were common.

Now I am selling a few cues (Palmer's) and the page views are more like 200. My guess is the novelty is over and the high fees caught up with ebay.

I still think it's a great way to find great stuff, but selling is definitely expensive and it's not the hot spot it once was. Bummer.
Do you guys remember Felix (Phinmole) ? He was always picking stuff up from pawn and estate sales and flipping them on EBay. Here too some.

I hope his health problems have improved. He always was helpful to answer my questions and give me pointers.

I remember well. Funny, I was just thinking of him yesterday.

It looks like phinmole.com is now a dead link though.

Oh yeah, I remember Phinmole. There were a lot of cue movers on Ebay.

The biggest buyer I remember was MTpockets4U - he sniped so many cues, it was unreal. He bought a bunch from me too.

Names like Osohappie, Stymiea,Billiard_King, Joerackem, ThePavlos, too many to name!

I modeled my original auctions after Stymiea. He never had a reserve and he described his cues in great detail. I admired his guts in letting the bidding determine the sale. There were a lot of eyeballs back then, now it seems a little risky.

Chris,

I see you sold cues to mtpockets4u, a good friend of mine from Des Moines with a massive collection of cues including
Palmer, Peterson, Schick, Tad, Balabushka, Szamboti, fancy Josswest, early rare Schon and many others.

Hi Will,

I ran into him at the ICCS in Las Vegas (where you and I met) - he brought along a few gems from his collection, including some Balabushka's and the Paradise cues made for Sinatra and Dean Martin. Is Rick still collecting? I think you appropriately described his collection using the word "massive". I would love to spend a week looking at his cues!

I myself have lost the desire to collect for some reason but I still love looking at cues.

Yep, that's him....RG

Come visit Kansas City for a couple days. Stay at our home, we'll have fun with cars, cues, vending machines, gas pumps, vintage slots, motorcycles,
BBQ, and I'll get your collecting gear back in overdrive!

You already have one motorcycle. Now you need one from each year, in each color, with every engine size!

And we'll visit mtpockets4u, about 2 1/2 hours away, and then you'll get stuck in collecting gear. Forever.

After being involved in this thread, I called Ebay asking why funds were not immediately available when I sell something. I have 60 positive feedback and have been a member since 2001. The reason they gave is that I didn't have enough transactions as a seller. They said that you need at least 15. I made that will my last sell so I should be good to go now. Hopefully this helps someone else.

Collecting is a disease. There is no cure. Only remissions. You will be pulled back. You will be pulled back. You will be pulled back. You will be pulled back. You will be pulled back. You will be pulled back.

What bothers me most about cues on eBay (besides the fear factor as to whether you'll get anything remotely resembling what you're bidding on) is the blatant misrepresentation.

Take this Schon SL5 for example... Seriously? "New old stock" and "refinished" shouldn't be talking about the same thing. At least they had it refinished by a 'cue craftsman' instead of a line cook.

I'm thinking hey, if that one sells for $2,400 I need to post my SL5! :withstupid:

....and a Ferrari or Aston Martin just gets you down the road.

Learn, wait, watch. Patience pays off. But you have to be ready to move. And you have to know what you are looking at.

Yes, you can definitely own one.

If you go to flea markets and garage sales you will open a lot of cases and find Budwiser cues before you open one and find treasure. But if you keep looking it will happen.

In fact, for me the stories of how I got some of my cues is more treasure than the cues themselves.

Not everybody enjoys that sort of thing...but I sure do.

.

I agree, the journey can be half the fun. I am always sniffing around to see whats for sale so maybe one day I will find a big name cue for an acceptable price.

I may have to check myself into rehab. You see Doc, it was like this, I saw a cue on ebay and it seemed like a good deal, the guy had no idea what it was, so I signed in and...

Watching the Schon

Maybe they are watching the Schon Cue to see if anybody buys it at that price. Michael

I'm sure the seller thinks the astronomical "Buy it Now" will yield higher offers than a realistic one, or maybe he plans on relisting the cue after this auction runs it's course for his actual target price (To make people think they're getting a deal.), or maybe he's just a dipshit?

Buying cues on ebay is an interesting game: You have to imagine all the angles and use all the clues to decipher a listing and determine your position in relation to the seller's. It's definitely not akin to buying from cornerstone or other reputable dealers.

It is, however, your best chance at making frequent scores.
