Shane started off great, played basically mistake-free for the first 8 games. Matched by perfect pool by Yu Lung. Made a few mistakes in the middle and end which cost him the match. Yu Lung played great overall. There were really 4 racks which made the difference. The one where YLC missed the 9, leaving Shane a tough but makeable 9 (basically a slightly tougher spot shot) which he missed back. The rack where YLC made that ridiculous cut on the 7 down the rail while jacked up over the 8 at the other end of the table. The rack where YLC pushed into a very tough jump on the 1, which Shane passed back and YLC jumped it in and ran out (I would have passed it back too, even if I jumped as well as Shane!). And the final rack where Shane had a roadmap out to make it 10-9 but played bad shape on his first shot letting YLC back to the table. Thats 4 racks that Shane got to the table where YLC won the game. That's just too many in a race to 11.

Yu Lung Chang is actually the favorite to win it from here imo, given how well he is playing and how many other matches people are still missing balls.

Shane, down 10-4, kept on digging in and did himself proud. YL Chang, who, including the China Open, has now won an almost unfathomable ten consecutive single elimination matches, is on fire, and Shane was unfortunate to draw him.

I posted this after it was over. But I agree, I've seen enough comebacks over the years to know anything is possible. If Shane ran out that easy rack to make it 10-9, he only needs to hope for one single mistake/skid/miss/unlucky shot from YLC, given he was breaking 10-10.

Absolutely love this cue.

Man... After seeing Darren's reaction to winning I can't wait to see Shane's when he finally wins it.

I bet he's going to be playing so much stronger next year because of this.

Shane's break was his main weapon. When he broke first and lost the rack cos of safety and then fell behind 2-0 after Chang held his break in 2nd rack that was something Shane was not used to. In this tourney I don't recall him trailling at start. Then Chang won on 2 more of racks that Shane broke and it uphill battle. add to that Chang's flawless display in most of match with crazy down the rail pots, jump safe, jump pot it all adds up

Hoo-boy, let the "See? Shane can't perform on the world stage!" Brit pile-on begin...

I think finish 5th in this World Championship is quite a performance for Shane, no shame at all. At the end some should be more realistic.

Shane played great represented really well definitely had some pressure on his opponent even though he was trailing.

Shane will return and I expect him to be a world champion once or more in his career.

I agree, but you know how those pesky Brit trolls are going to spin this. ;)

We will probably never see a player win twice in 10 years in this Qatar 9 ball and the China Open. When the Americans were bringing World championships home there wasn't a hundred players that could win the thing. Also the Americans still had the strongest players in the world except for a few PI players. Europe and Asian were like the Arab counties are today. If most American pros think they are good enough, will watch the Arab players pass them by also. Johnnyt

I definitely agree. You can "perform" consistently in pool, but your results may differ. The timing of the mistakes and "rolls" can easily change the outcome of a match played in this format and equipment. Personally, I believe 9 ball is too easy for these pros to play such a short race, especially with the magic rack.

With that said, 5th place is remarkable even for a great player like SVB. Luck will play itself out in the long run if he keeps attempting at these Asian events. Remember, Bustamante did not win a world title until a few years ago.

imo Shane clearly had less finesses and delicacy in his shots than Chang last night. it was down to 3-4 balls but Shane did not look like he was going to win it anyway. Chang produced more precision in safety and potting. I think Shane position play was less refined as well, which showed in the 5 ball prior to Chang's incredible jack-up 7.
