Shimming the pockets amounts to stacking material on top of one another.
Extending the subrail adds wood to the end of the existing rail so the cusion can be cut to a longer length, and facings added to the end making your final pocket dimension.

Every Gold Crown, I have played on that had shimmed pockets rejected balls that were hit good, and I mean everyone. ( a ball down the rail at pocket speed or better usually ends up jawed)

Tables that I have played on with the rail extensions still rejected shots but only shots that are hit bad.

Here is a picture of my 8'GCII with rail extensions by Donny from SDBilliards.

You should look into getting some GC4 pockets. Holds 8 balls without peeking out and won't scuff onto your cue. Plus look at how much better it looks and fits on my GC3 that Donny did rail extensions for. They're pricy but worth every cent.

For a legitimate job it will cost you $1250 -$1500 that includes new Artemis Intercontinental K-55 rails and your subrails milled and rebuilt which extends them. Could be less if its determined they don't have to completely redo the subrails.

if mark gregory is is in california
is it practical to have my table taken apart and shipped to him
then have him ship me the rails back and have someone here put it back together???
do you think i can find someone to take the table apart when he knows i dont trust him to do the rail work???
also who in fl would you recommend for that is if they would agree??
last
am i correct to assume as someone mentioned above that an extended rail pocket will play cleaner/truer than a shimmed pocket???
thanks for all the help so far

Mark Gregory (Perfect Pocketz) is in Atlanta Georgia.

Donny Mills (SDBilliards) in in San Diego Californina.

The following is my .02

If a mechanic has any issue with you sending the rails off than get another mechanic. The guys here have solid reputation period. If your mechanic does not know how to do the rails and wants to become a better mechanic, and learn than to do the rails. than introduce him the this section of the Forum. and he can do what he wants from there.

Yes, you can and should send the rails to Mark or Donny.

Yes, a table with the extended rails will play truer than a table tha has been shimmed. The shims will move and the angles will change which will cause balls to jaw instead of drop.

Interesting thread...I'll be tightening my pockets in a couple of days and it'll be a Shim additions. I'm just curious to know if it's really that much more different than extended rails?

I respectfully disagree. Wes Burden is a good mechanic with a solid reputation based out of the Tampa area

He has done a few tables for me including a 9' Brunswick sub rail extension job.

I am not a qualified mechanic but I am an experienced player and can recognize a well done table, or, a poorly done table

I have also experimented with shims and can't support that decision unless the economics dictate that you go that route.

I know Wes, extending the rails to tighten the pockets is one thing, but to correct the sub-rail design to get the rails to play at their absolute best....is not something Wes can do, I know all those that can, and Wes is not one that can.

When I hear "I know all..." Used by a person in a sentence it pretty much rings my bullshit bell

Sorry, I tried to be polite but clearly you either have a closed mind or a sense of omnipotence that is beyond reason.

Nice chatting with you there King

That's OK Joe, I know what I know....and you DON'T know....what I know, so it's all OK.;)

Glen, the problem is not what you know

The problem is your steadfast belief that you know everything

And, you just don't know what you don't know
