Shooting with feel

Okay DM, I know this thread is going to piss you off but wtf, you like being pissed anyway. For those of you that don't know, I got some lessons from Buddy Hall a while back and I've been busting my ass trying to make what he taught me work for me. It hasn't been easy and my game went down for quite a while which was very frustrating to say the least! Anyway, I finally feel like I'm getting it and what seems to be happening is that I'm "feeling" what he taught me. I know this is really hard to explain but I just started feeling the rithym of his pre-shot routine. It's like everything is finally falling into place and I finally get it.

I just played a friend of mine who I've played off and on with for years. He's always been a tough game for me. If I win, it's usually by a hair and if he wins, it's usually by a large margin. Well today we played a race to 10 in 9b and I beat him 10 to 6. Then we played 1h a race to 3 and I blanked him 3 zip. Now that just doesn't usually happen so I'm feeling pretty psyched right now. When Buddy was teaching me, he kept saying you got to feel how to hit the balls. Well, I think I'm finally starting to feel it!

I do not think anyone is taking away feel. You have a newly found feeling of confidence and you need to continue building on it with practice.

When talking about feel the reference is to things such as speed and hit. If you have ever been in the zone were you can run balls like it is nothing you will find that it is a good feeling. What has happened is that everything is working in harmony and without thought. You feel that your aiming system is secure and questioning it does not enter your mind (as if you were not using one), you have a feel for the cue ball as if it were part of you and the visualization of what needs to be done is so perfectly clear.

Think of feel, which is very important, as the part that deals with movement. Think of aim as the absolute alignment, or sight, that gets the ball to the pocket. You can be in the zone and have variations to rhythm and timing because your sub-conscious will wake you at the moment something does not seem right.

Feel is important, but feel does not make the shot. Feel will help you get great control over the cue ball though. And it is OK to feel good about how you are shooting. But remember feel is affected by your emotions and is quite fragile.

This is where you and everybody else that thinks that is soooo far off base that it's not even funny. Aside from the aiming process, EVERYTHING is FEEL.
Setting up to the shot and seeing your alignment on the balls isn't this complex feat either once you know what the hell you're doing and have it down pat. There are multiple ways of doing it to make it easier for making balls.

But everything after that is feel. I would be a terrible teacher/instructor because I could no more explain to someone how I work my way around the table on a rack of balls than how to design a rocket to go into space.
And if I've EVER said otherwise in over 3,000 posts, please show me where.

Feel ...

As far as feel in Pool, knowing how to control the cue ball
with speed and english, I think I would compare it to
shooting a basketball. Some basketball players are
natural shooters, they have that feel. Their mechanics
are good, their judgement is good, and when they release
the ball, they know whether it is on or not. Other basketball
players are just mechanical, they have developed their shots
and moves over time and a lot of hard work. It is the same
with Pool players to some respect. How you feel physically
can affect your 'feel' and your game. I know when I lift
weights and start to get pumped up some, that it affects
some of my shots in Pool. Likewise, if you are sporting
a bad hangover, a little shaky, it can affect your 'feel'.
In those times, you have evaluate how it is affecting
your game and make adjustments to get back in stroke.

Mechanics are important but feel is everything. Now all you have to do is run 3 balls.

Right, feel in other words are the "soft hands" of pool. Even the most mechanical player in any sport develop feel. Aim and mechanics have to be there first otherwise the feel is just a hallucination.

You guys that jump on me or anything that has to do with a SYSTEM when it comes to aiming just blow me away. Honestly, I don't know where you're coming from or how you would possibly be so f*#king stupid. It leads me to believe more and more that the majority of you really are hacks that just like to argue.

Freddy The Beard has an entire book on "Banking SYSTEMS", DeadAim came on here at one point and posted some very lengthy and phenomenol "Kicking SYSTEMS", and your own hero Buddy Hall has a tape out of something he's taught for many years on how to work your way around the table for CB control called "The Clock SYSTEM", many players use the rails to move around and it's called the DIAMOND SYSTEM, and some others connect the dots with the diamonds though imaginary lines and play position with what's known as the GRID or ZONE SYSTEM, but let one mention of the word SYSTEM get mentioned in conjunction with AIMING and you do EVERYTHING in your power to try and dispute, refute, or whatever you guys do to make yourselves feel good that no such thing exists and that it's all done by FEEL, which is ridiculous unless you're a blind pool player and you're doing it by braille. F&#KING MORONS...(does that make you feel better Rick...does it seem like I got pissed enough for you and your entertainment pleasure?)

Stop making so much sense! You're destroying the stereotyped image of DM as a senile crazy illogical argumentative old fool.

HA HA...I think anybody that's seen my picture knows I'm not old or old looking. The ONLY word up there that has merit is "argumentative"...and I wouldn't even do that if you weren't so dumb and just knew your place!

My wife has what she calls the "feel" method of balancing her checking account. If she "feels" she has some money, she writes a check. :(

Hey DM, can you spare a dime?

How did you get the "feel"

What did Buddy teach you that helped you develop your feel????

I don't think anyone in their right mind would deny that "feel" has a lot to do with any "eye hand coordination" sport.......However....Let me pose a question....Why do you grip the cue the way you do????? Why would you not put your thumb under the cue and wrap your index finger over the top??? Why would you not keep your thumb on top of the cue instead of letting it go to the side of the cue????

It is possible to develop feel with improper fundamentals, but it seems to me that learning feel with mechanically sound fundamentals (AKA:SYSTEMS) would be a better way to go...

I believe Authur Anderson was experimenting with that same accounting method.

Read the part I made bold. Seems in your raging fury you missed it.

The only time I was EVER wrong, was when I actually doubted something and THOUGHT that I MADE a mistake. :p :D
Yeah, and you're not vain coz vanity's a fault  :p

What was it Carl Jung said? To paraphrase: What angers us in others is what we sub-consciously recognize in ourselves!
