Should you practice artistic billiards?

For the sake of this topic, I am going to lump artistic pool into this as well as artistic billiards. Why practice it? Maybe because you like it? There is more to Artistic Pool then just set up shots. There are very intricate stroke shots that require a lot of skill to do. I have been doing artistic pool events and shows for 8 years now and the most popular thing I hear is "when does that come up in a game?" Some of the stuff we do will never come up. However, you would be surprised on how much of it does. I was at league one night and had the cue ball in the middle of the table. I was on the 8 and it was hanging in the corner pocket. My CB was blocked by a number of my opponents ball. I grabbed my jump cue and jumped the CB one handed to make the 8 since the CB was too far our for me to bridge on the table. Developing the stroke needed to move the cue ball around as we do has really helped me in my regular pool game to move the CB when I need to. Its funny when I have people in the pool room try some artistic pool shots. They find out really quick that it isn't as easy as it looks or as easy as they say it is.

I think aspects of Artistic Pool/Billiards can absolutely help someone's regular pool game. The more you know, the better you will be.

“I’d like to see him try that in the cage.”

Isn’t that what MMA fans say about any other pure martial art discipline?

Crabs in the bucket mentality. You can do whatever you want with your time.

Studying Samaritan or bird watching or rowing a boat or coin collecting or yoga or football or American football or mowing your lawn. All a waste of time. On purpose.

Strive and non-strive. Both are important for mental health and a good life.

The incoming player has the advantage of placing the 1, 2 and 3 anywhere to help make the nine.

I started practicing full vertical masse shots within six months of starting to play. Willie Mosconi told me to and I believed him. I have three masse shafts for my Balabushka.

Bob, the troll feeder <-- has ripped the cloth more than any jump-shot-shooting 3
I'll put some skittles out under the bridge too. I have never ripped the cloth and I tend to play above the table more than most. It done correctly, a lot of shots do not take all that much power. That doesn't mean you won't get table burns. Anything vertical will leave a mark.

I don't know how many remember when Venom started, but his table was burnt up! I'm sure he has some good sponsors to replace the cloth frequently. If you want to get good above the table, that is just the price you must pay.

When developing pool mastery practicing specific shots over and over again brainwashed me. I neglected my safe game from over practicing offensive play.

My solution was to start being creative with trickshot principles. If I played in right in, players wouldn't notice me setting up a trick shot during the match. When it happen their reaction was undeniable.

If your playing stronger players, it helps to use tactics they have never seen before. Ideally I hope the three foul rule gets exercised more because of the trickshot practice.

I am rewriting military entrance examination math/physics problems to be in pool terms.

The only useful pool knowledge is the one that helps you meet the minimum academic qualifications to serve in US armed forces.

I will post the questions for review later.

Military academic standards are interesting to teach.

It will take awhile I like writing it as a set

Try to come up with what example shows a release of gravitational potential energy.

A cue ball that is frozen to the rail.
The cue ball jumping off the table
A cue ball that has draw
A cue ball that falls in a pocket

I think all aspiring players, once the fundamentals are down, should experiment some on the artistic side of pool in order to learn and develop their creativity. It can really get you out of a tight spot or allow you to put your opponent in a tight spot.

There is nothing quite as satisfying in pool than when your opponent thinks he/she has you beat (no obvious shot, no safety options), but you pull off a double-kiss massè shot that allows you to win the game. That's not a shot you just step up and hit well without having learned and practiced it a few times at some point.

Anybody ever notice how dumstin likes to use Dr Dave's current posts as 'inspiration'?

I wrote a song called stairway to highway to hell.
