Sizing up the Women's BCA Open Draw

As is so often the case in women's pro pool events, the first round matchups are not as intriguing as they might be, because the elite in women's pool play so much stronger than the rest. Still, one match that has a lot of potential is the match between Jasmin Ouschan and Tracie Hines.

It's in the second round that the matchup s begin to get fascinating. For example, there's a pretty good chance that any or all of these matches might take place n the second round:

Romana Dokovic vs Sarah Ellerby, Jeanette Lee vs Wendy Jans, Melissa Herndon vs Melissa Little, Jennifer Barretta vs Kim Shaw, Jasmin Ouschan vs Gerda Hofstatter, Helena Thornfeldt vs Jennifer Chen

The gem, of course, would be Ouschan vs Hostatter. As a young girl growing up in Austria, Oushcan looked up to fellow Austrian and 1995 world champion Hofstatter.

Does anyone know the match schedule, what time matches are on what days? I hate that this tourney is extended...I don't know when to expect updates, LOL. I see that some matches have already been updated.

Also I hope that anyone that is there in person can provide us with updates. (Hint, hint SJM! :))

BTW, I don't mean to disappoint SJM on his want of an Ouschan vs Hostatter match, but I say Hines will win the first round against Ouschan.

Landshark, I'll do what I can when arrive on Tuesday night, but I'm not too optimistic about the extent to which I'll be able to post when I get there, as a close friend of mine arrives on Wednesday night, which will make my schedule pretty busy.

Agreed that Hines has a shot against Ouschan, but it would clearly be a mild upset.

I'll be more than happy to post updates for the person that provides me with a laptop! :D

Well you shoulda said something sooner!!!!

Thanx anyway. ;)

And SJM...just if you get the chance, that's all. :)

Lori Jon Jones

Just saw Lori Jon Jones' name on the brackets. Does she play in every BCA tourney or is this just a special one? Can we be expecting to see her more often?

Loree Jon has retired from the WPBA tour but makes an occasional appearance. For example, she recently did an exhbiition with Jeanette in Atlantic City. Remember, Landshark, although the BCA Open is included in the WPBA rankings, it is not a WPBA event, so this probably shouldn't be viewed as suggesting in any way that Loree Jon is considering rejoining the tour.

i have a feeling it will be seuyen rhee vs. kim shaw...........but hey, thats just my opinion :D

VAP

Barretta and Rhee are good friends, with a lot of competitive history against each other from their JPNEWT and CAT regional tour qualifier days. The two of them met in the most recent WPBA event in San Diego, and in that one, it was Barretta prevailing 9 - 5. Jennifer is the favorite here, but the match has the potential to be a really good one. We'll keep an eye on it, VA.

Well, Dokovic vs Ellerby isn't happening. Ellerby did her part, but Atwell, fresh off her career-best fifth place finish at WPBA San Diego, has beaten Dokovic, to earn the second round matchup with Ellerby.

Also, the battle of the AZB Melissas isn't happening, as Mona Remedios has beaten Melissa Little, and will play Herndon next.

On the other hand, Jeanette Lee vs Wendy Jans is happening, and that could really be a good one in round two.

Well...you did get your Ouschan vs Hostatter match.

And Chen vs Thornfeldt should be a fine match, too.

Perhaps you're wondering how #15 can play #10 in round two. In a WPBA event, it couldn't happen. In the BCA open, however, some of the foreign players are seeded. For the last few years, and this year, too, Shin Mei Liu and Akimi Kajitani have been seeded, so only the top 14 ranked WPBA entrants get seeded. Chen is #15 in the WPBA rankings at present, and would, therefore, not be a Top 16 seed in this event.

SJM,
Understatement of the week. Didn't Wendy just beat Jeanette last week in the Amway Cup?? It may be payback time.

Well, on this occasion, Willie, I had to go to the Amway site and look it up. I couldn't remember whether they'd even hooked up at Amway. It turns out you're right, though, Wendy beat Jeanette 7 - 2.

As the great Alfred Lord Tennyson said, "revenge is a dish most prefer to serve cold." I'm sure Jeanette will be up for this one.

Well let's hope she wins two games more, and make it 9-2 ;)
Jeanette move over for the young guns..... :)

Well, the Black Widow served it ice cold on this occasion for a 9 - 3 win over the young and very promising Belgian.

It's nice to see Ewa Laurance getting some good wins. She beat Ellie Chang in the first round and then took out Julie Kelly 9-4. She plays Jennifer Barretta next.

Yes, it would be great to see Ewa finish well at this event. She's a class act all the way - and long overdue for a good tournament! :)
