Slap in the face

Short story from the pool hall today. A guy around 45 or so comes in with a much older guy I would guess to be in his 80's. I don't think they were father, son or of any relation. The way it sounded the older gent lived in a home of sorts and the younger guy brought him out to shoot some pool.

The young guy is telling the old man that he isn't going to take it easy on him and a bunch of other casual sh!t talk. The old guy keeps a smile but you can tell he wasn't too amused. To make it better the old guy had to be 6'4" or so and that is taking into consideration his hunched back. When he stood straight he would have been a tall man. You could see in his face he wasn't amused being talked to like a 4 year old and if it was 40 years ago the young guy wouldn't have been so quick to open his mouth.

They start playing 8 ball. When the old guy takes up the cue you could tell he was comfortable with it and it looked natural in his hands. Not out of place like he didn't know where to set it down. The young kid broke and missed a fairly easy but long shot to the corner. The old guy ran four and "missed" leaving the cue ball just burried. Smiled at the kid and told him he guessed he got lucky. Ran out the next inning. And the next 6 games went just about like that.

I don't know if he had a lot of game in his prime but this wasn't the first time he had played and the kid went from treating him like a child to down right pissed off. It had to have been one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

I finnished up about the same time they did and the old guy walked up and asked about the table under the cover. He said he hadn't seen a 6'x12' snooker table in years and I told him I thought it was one of the few left in the state. We chatted about the small town he grew up in and how it had 2 pool halls and they were always busy and he talked a bit about playing 5 pins on the billiards table and snooker on the 9'. He also added how his dad had him banned from the pool halls when he was 14 or 15. Said he found a way in anyway.

About that time a friend of mine walked up and heard the older gent mention the name of the room he was banned from. It was the same room that my buddies father played in as a kid, although it was about 15 or 20 years later the way it sounded. Small world. They kept chatting and unfortunately I had to leave.

I didn't get his name and doubt I will ever bump into him again but I will say that I enjoyed watching him. He never ran a rack and he missed some balls but the whole time he was sticking it to that younger guy and loving every minute of it.

Sorry about the length just felt like this was something someone else would enjoy.

great story

+1...don't need to teach old dogs new tricks when they already know a few old ones.

Reminds me of this pool hall that I used to "live" at. I was there one night and this older guy probably in his late 60's brought in his grandson I'm guessing. So they are shooting and such the old guy is obviously a good shooter so he is startiong to get cocky...everytime he wins he bellows out "YOU KNOW WHY I LIKE TO BREAK?" course the kid asks him and the old man replies "CAUSE THAT MEANS I WON HAHAHAHA"

...that's about all I have for a story I played him a couple games and got my cue handed to me.

SWEET is the only word that describes the story you have reported on.

Great story. It just goes to show you. You may be too old to cut the mustard, but you can still lick the lid. I have no idea what the hell that means.

40+ years ago I lived in Newell, up around Storm Lake. They had a tavern/pool hall with three snooker tables and a 3 cushion table, nothing else. There wasn't much else to do for entertainment around there and some very good pool players frequented that place.

I wouldn't be surprised if your guy knew about that place. It was called Elmers.

thats one thing i love about pool no matter how good you are...one day your going to be just a little off and someone can spank you silly...i was in a local pool hall here playing with my friend and his sister when this kid around my age started playing on the table RIGHT next to us which kinda irked me considering there were 7 others that were emtpy and he was playing by himself getting cocky and i was just using a bar cue so i asked him if he wanted to play for a little bit and i thought he was cocky before wow was i wrong he had a huge smile telling me he will play any game for any amount so i just threw out 9 ball race to 3 for 20 and he jumped all over it....for one set lol...i made the 9 on the first break and broke and ran out the other two and his smile went away REALLY fast he paid me and his time and stormed out the door pissed

I am so glad he got to and did that. We are all going to get old someday and of course our game will go with it. It makes me feel so good when I read or here things like this. We had a gentleman 96 years young that played at Guys and Dools in Roanoke VA. for 3 to 4 hrs a day. He would walk 4 miles a day to keep in shape. Otto was what they called him and at one time he was a played but at 96 he could still play pretty good. He has passed now and I really miss him. I always looked forward to seeing him while I was there. Thanks for sharing

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I try to spend time with a couple of the regulars who are in their 60's. Both play/played well and both spent some time in the Armed Forces. And they are about the only ones who will play straight pool with me.

One of them I have gotten to be very good friends with. Golf in the morning and pool in the afternoon and evening type thing. He beats me at everything and we both love to gamble so it works for us; well for him at least.

In my quest to find a game I can "take" him in I threw out the idea of pitching quarters. I pitch fairly decent. With out missing a beat he went off of a story from when he was in the service and was stationed in the Pacific. He was throwing quarters with some locals when a young lady sitting next to the wall they were tossing at decided she would help out her man. She casually hiked up the skirt and uncrossed the legs. Then he looked at me and said "Now thats how you get a guy off his game." I asked him if he won and he just smiled. I'm guessing I'm the dog in that one too...

Here's a cute story.A number of years ago I was playing pool ( 1 pkt I might add) with a friend when from behind me I hear someone say "Excuse me but would you like to play some 9 ball?"
I'm not really too interested in playing 2 games at once so I turn around to see who this rude person is. Standing there in front of me is a scrawny 15-16 yo kid. I asked him "Were you talking to me ?" Yes , he said" And added " How about 9 ball for a couple dollars?" I said sure.
He racked the 1st game and I broke and ran the rack.As he handed over his ONLY $2 He said " Gosh, you play a lots better than I thought"
I knew what had happened,he saw 2 old fish knocking the balls around and seemingly unable to pocket a ball even an inch from the hole. He thought he had an easy mark.He never realized we were playing 1 pkt that day.

I think it would have been a cuter story had you handed the kid back his money.

I live in a college town. Not one of those cities that have colleges but a town that grows 30% when the students are around. So often dumb and drunk college kids who think they can beat the world with their rocket fast shots and knuckle rest bridge will mock us. We get a lot of questions about straight pool and 1 pocket and I won't even start on them trying to play 8 ball on the snooker table. You would think that the fact the balls won't fit in the rack is enough but no. And it isn't all stupidness, they just don't know their world is not the only world. I was racking 10 ball one night and had a kid of about 21 walk up and tell me that the 9 wasn't in the middle. Two days later I got to watch a young lady rubbing the tip of her cue on the hand chalk block.

Nice story. Good to hear one where the action is better than cheap bar trash. I get tired of those "players" that always have to tell you how great they use to play but just lost interest and don't care to play any more.

Thanks for sharing.

slap

Makes by 72yr old heart swell with pride, as i also love to break!!!NICE story, and yes us old dog do know a few tricks!!!! stick:confused:

Great day out!

Although the younger man was a little cocky to the elder gentleman, you have to respect that he got the gentleman out of the home for a day of pool. I'll bet he enjoyed every minute of it. Considering the gentleman's age it could be his last time out to enjoy playing (let's hope not). I hope the younger man asked him out at every opportunity for a good ass whoop-n.

I must say that there is so much cockyness and arrogance in many of the pool players today ,it ticks me off to see not showing respect to their elders . Yes ,I know, some might not deserve it ,but i was raised to respect your elders. To get a chance to carry on a conversation with that man ,and to listen to the stories that he could tell ,would be priceless ! Old men playing pool because they still love the game ,,,thats where I want to be in my later years !
