Sleeping in your car, a warning

I will never drive when I get sleepy. I wrecked a Corvette by falling asleep when I was still a teenager. So when I get sleepy, I pull over and find a place to rest.

Last week I went down to Temecula to play in a poker tournament. It was a thousand dollar buy-in with a $250,000 guarantee. They ended up with 390 players and a $390,000 purse, 130K for first. Sweet!

I played until about Midnite and busted out about 85th. No money though. I got in my car and headed home, 90 miles away. After driving a short distance I realized I was too sleepy to drive. I pulled off the freeway in Lake Elsinore and looked for a quiet spot to rest. I drove into town and parked on the main drag next to other cars. It was about 12:30 AM. I put my seat back and fell sound asleep.

About 1:15 AM there is a loud knock on my window. I'm startled awake and see a young hispanic kid at the window. He asks me if I have a cigarette, and I tell him I don't smoke. He then asks me for $5, and I realize I have a problem. I look out the other window and see two more young kids. They must have been about 18 or 19. They immediately start trying to get in my locked doors.

My first reaction is to reach for my .22 derringer in the ashtray. It holds five shots, revolver style. The first kids head is about two feet from mine, as he plays with the door, trying to get it open. I can't miss from that close, but think better of it, and try to start the car. He is now simulating a weapon under his shirt. Why I didn't shoot him I don't know. I was afraid, and there were three of them. If they had gotten in the car (actually a Ford Bronco II), I would have been in a very bad spot.

Anyway, I got the truck started, and backed up fast. Two of the kids disappeared, but the first one hung onto my door. My little truck is cold blooded and it died. He is banging on the window hard now, trying to break it. Somehow I get the truck started again and slowly pull away with him running alongside, yelling at me and simulating something under his shirt. I got away. No harm, no foul. Just a good scare.

When I got a few blocks down the street I became very mad, and thought of going back for a moment. I ended up back on the freeway and drove on home. I told Tang and Kim about my experince but not my family. They would be too worried.

Now I know that pulling off the freeway to sleep may not be such a good idea late at night. Maybe parking in an all night gas station would be better, but there is so much light it is hard to sleep. And maybe next time, I will take my .38, so I can handle three guys. And there will probably never be a next time like that. I'm getting too old for this kind of stuff. Maybe it's time for me to retire from gambling.

Sorry gang. I just realized that this should be in non pool related section. Maybe Mike can move it over.

Jay,

Sounds like you were lucky!

If I get tired, I find a hotel parking lot with lots of light to rest. Never been bothered.

A friend of mine says he just finds a donut shop parking lot because the cops are there all the time. LOL

Jay, I am very glad that everything turned out OK. This situation proves what I have believed for a long time, and most Americans have forgotten. You always have to be prepared to take care of any situation that may raise it's ugly head, because most likely the Police will not be around when they are really needed. Not because they do not care, but because Crime in this country is on the rise, and there are just not enough of them to go around.

You did the right thing by not going back, because if a situation did happen where you had to shoot one of the little pieces of shit you would not have had a leg to stand on in court. The little piece of shit will get his soon enough any way, pieces of shit like that do not live too long.

Well, again I am truly glad that you are OK, oh!! and by the way, I have been shot and if I were you I would replace both the 22 and the 38 with a 44 Mag with Corbon Loads non-hollow point rounds for traveling. That way you can shoot straight through the door if need be and still blow the piece shit away.

Good Night!!!!!!

It's apparent to you and me that those kids had bad intentions, but surprisingly it may not be to the courts. In my state, Michigan, we have a new piece of legislation called the "Castle Doctrine". It applies to your house or your car equally, with no distinction whatsoever. Basically, if someone breaks into your house or car it is assumed by the law that they intended to do you great harm, and you can legally defend yourself. In the past, you needed to prove that the perp had a weapon or the capacity and intent to harm you. No more !

One caveat though. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the exact legalities of self defense in your state. For example, you may have been required to make your best attempt to withdraw from a potential crime as you did, nonsensical as that may seem. Some states even require you to do that in your home in the instance of violent illegal entry. If that is the case in your state there is probably a local organization working dilligently to pass similar legislation to ours here in Michigan, and Florida's etc. They can undoubtedly use your help even if it's just a small contribution. One place to start might be at your local gun range...Tom

I have been in what for most people would be alot of fights/altercations either due to the job I was doing or the places I was hanging out at. There were only two situations in my life where I had made up my mind I was ready to pull the trigger. I can tell you every detail of both of them. Luckily I was able to get out of both without even pointing my weapon.

Having said that I have done a lot of thinking and a small amount of training in this stuff. This is my opinion.

You did everything right.

1.) If you shoot the pr!cks in California without (I presume) a concealed carry license no matter if its Osama Bin Laden you are in some sh!t.

2.) As a civilian it is your RESPONSIBILITY under most state laws in most situations to try to flee before engaging.

3.) They probably did not have a firearm. If they did and wanted to shoot you, it would of been a gunfight and not a guy banging on the door. If the cops roll up and there is a dead guy hanging on your door with no weapon that is bad juju.

You were prepared. Maybe not as well as you would of liked but the best handgun in the world is the one you have with you. Good on you for that.

You also did the most important thing in this type of situation. The high speed guys call it "Getting off the X". Basically a cool guy way of saying get the hell out of Dodge.

Don't sweat it Jay, you did good.

Jay, glad you made it out of that situation OK. You are an asset to the pool community and AZB. I must ask you though, why not get a motel room?

Jay, it was good of you to have runaway from that situation. It was a much better choice than doing the inevitable. Be carefull next time.

Jay, Next time just pull in the gas station or the Denny's that is right by an exit. The main drag in Elsinore is definately not a good idea.:(
Glad everything turned out OK.

Glad you made it out ok Jay.this is happening more and more all over.there was an incident a couple years ago in Rapid City S.D.that was similar....a man pulled into a well lit parking lot the store had closed at 10pm.but the lights stay on bright as a baseball park..well 2 punks high on drugs decided to mess with somebody..about 2 am.they ride thru the lot and see this guy sleeping in his car...one goes on each side of the car..they start punching him thru the window..then the one punk takes out a knife and starts to cut the guy ..the victim takes out his own knife and slices the punk with the knife in the throat killing him....Police caught the other guy who ended up going to prison..the victim was a Viet Nam Vet who was just defending himself Police said.we need more common sense laws thruout the States that protect the victims....again Jay i'm glad you are well....

Glad to hear your all right Jay. Next time bigger gun and a motel room. I've shot a few people in my day...it didn't hurt a bit. Johnnyt

I was only 90 miles from home, and I just wanted to get home. I knew I only needed an hour or so of rest and I would be fine.

Thanks guys for the kind words. I'm glad it was only a scare. I guess things are getting uglier out there. I've slept in my car dozens of times, and the only other time someone woke me was a highway patrolman checking to see if I was okay.

I used to be a scrapper, but don't feel up to it anymore. Hey, I'm not a kid either. I've owned guns all my life, but NEVER shot anyone yet. In fact this is only the third time I was ready to use one. A policeman friend of mine in Bakersfield told me something years ago I never forgot. He said don't take out a gun unless you are prepared to use it.

Somehow in that spot, the little .22 seemed awfully small. But I definitely would have used it if they got one of my doors open. I will think twice next time, before I park anywhere at night. I actually thought I was in a good spot to sleep undisturbed.

Glad it came out ok Jay , those little bass turds probably don't know how lucky they were that they didn't get the door open, if they were carrying they would have showed it to you.

Everyone loves to have a gun it seems... you even mention that you need to carry a bigger one next time. All that I ask is that the readers of this thread (even the original poster) to re-read the original post and take note that a gun was never needed. Common sense easily took care of the situation with no bloodshed. If a gun was used, or even brandished, this situation would have turned out much, much worse.

This is proof of the often ignored fact that most all situations are resolved better without a gun. The use of, or showing of, a gun causes situations to explode. Cooler, more logical thinking is ignored because of fear. I know people can quote rare situations where a gun saved a life (of one person in the situation). All I ask you to consider is the numerous (majority of) situations where a gun causes everything to go bad.

Next time, leave the gun at home. There will be no temptation to use it and cause yourself and others unnecessary grief and suffering.

Please be gentle with your "my second amendment right," "better safe than sorry," and "out-of-control crime in this country warrants it" replies. :)

Here's an idea Jay, get yourself an understudy. When I worked in the pool rooms My mentor made most of his living in Atlantic City 2 hours away. I used to close up the pool room, pick him up, and he would sleep while I drove to AC. He would work his system at craps and I would mostly watch making small time bets. Then he would bust, or make out and we would either get compt or drive home. I had a great time, learned a little about how to gamble correctly, and got a little road experience......:D

I agree with your philosophy 100% but I'm still thinking of arming myself for the first time in my 64 years. I'm thinking a 380 w/hollow points.

Jay: I'm sure we're all very glad you made it through that situation without getting hurt or hurting someone. It seems that you are the sort of person that the world needs.

I wonder if a bit of exercise would have been a better answer to the problem of being tired. Maybe find a Walmart or other all night store and take a 10 minute walk. Often in my case it's not so much being "tired" as it is being sleepy and a walk or some water on the back of the neck would do the trick. The water on the back of the neck seems to be an especially good way to become more alert. I have no idea why that works so well but for me it does wonders.

I disagree... A punk intent on robbery/possible assault could have lost his life that night.

To me, that would have been a better outcome.

If it had been me, I would have researched what exactly my rights were as soon as I got my weapons license, and if I would have been within my rights to shoot one of them as soon as they attempted to get in, the world would have had at LEAST one more dead/seriously injured criminal.

Lazybum, you need to do some research into Texas' gun laws. I believe they have one of the most liberal definitions of self defense, and for a law abiding citizen, getting a weapon license is super easy.

It is just a coincidence Texas has one of the lowest crime rates in the U.S.? Here's a clue..

It's because the criminals know they will get shot dead by the majority of the citizens if they make ONE wrong move.
