I'm have a big problem dealing with slow players, those guy's who walk around the table 3-4 times and take like 50 practice strokes. I'm not a very good player though but I won my first tournament on saterday.

Thanks,
Tj

Everyone has a right to play at their own reasonable tempo. I really believe this and try hare not to let it bother me. I will even stand up and fight for their right.
BUT, I SOMETIMES WONDER JUST WHAT IN THE HELL THEY ARE THINKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????? DID GOD PUT THEM HERE JUST TO PUNISH ME OR WHAT????????

Once I come to know that the player is sssssssslllllllllllloooooooooooowww, I do not play with him at all. There is no real solution. No body does anything about it even in the tournaments. Just stay away from them inorder to enjoy the pool.

GolfproTj,

Listen to Vagabond as his solution is the only one I have found effective for my own personal enjoyment of the game. I don't know if you are really a golf pro but if you are you all ready know how slooooow golfers are treated. A notoriously slow golfer, be they pro's or slashers, can't put together a foursome on Saturday morning because he can't find three people stupid enough to subject themselves to that kind of torture for 4>5 hours. Pool, golf, or tiddely winks it doesn't matter you run into the sloooooooow. To paraphrase Vag..."let'm in the dust"

Just like a root canal

Yes, you start to thiink a root canal would be more fun.
I used to think that everyone's brain had the same speed
for neural impulses, but my mind has changed. If you are
intellectually challenged by a 6" cut into the side, and sliding
the cue ball down 12" for shape on the next shot, you need
to keep your day job, and seriously think about giving up on
Pool. There is no reason for someone taking a minute and
a half to shoot that shot, especially someone that is good
in the first place. They are stalling or trying to take you off
your game.
I just don't play this type of player unless I have to in a
tournament, and I will complain to the tournament
director about slow play.

Someone needs to tell them what to do?

Slow players are part of pool. There have always been slow players, and there always be. I don't have that much time to play and I don't want to spend my table time waiting for someone else to play.

In tournaments the TD always has the option of starting the 'shot clock' rule.
30 sec/shot. I've enforced this rule in the past. Neither player complained. This is the normal response.

Story from the past; There was this new guy in the pool room, average player, played in the 9 ball and 8 ball tournaments, cashed sometimes. He used a house cue.

He started asking questions about signing up for the new One Pocket league during one of the 9 ball tournaments and everyone told him he was too slow to play 1P. I had never seen so many pool players agree on ONE Thing so quickly in a pool room.

He asked me if I thought he played slow. I told him that if he watched the other players, of any skill level, he would have a difficult time finding someone that played as slow or slower.

Yes, you play slow, either find a cure or look forward to not having many people enjoy playing with you.

I'm just guessing, but I think most slow players have trouble deciding what to do and trusting that decision. Maybe they are single and never had a wife to tell them what to do all the time :D

Just make the 8 or 9 ball on the break against slow players, then you won't have to put up with slow play.

I'll have to admit I take my time on some shots but that is the exception, normaly I shoot pretty quick. The 1st shot following the break takes me a minute or 2 in eightball, I don't shoot until I have made 3 or 4 balls in my head and understand the layout of the balls.

Keep in mind I am over middle age so if I'm playing against you and just staring at the table, make sure I'm awake after 3 or 4 minutes. Don't want to be accused of slow play while napping.

I am one of those “Slow Player” that likes to walk over and look a shots over from all angles.

I take my time as I want to understand my shot, next shot, where I need to hit the Cue Ball for position for next shot.

I play often with a guy who tries to rush me, and I just ignore him.

Maybe I take 30-40 SECONDS Maximum between shots. I do not feel I am taking an unreasonable amount of time.

Many years ago I drew an extremely slow player in a tournament. He knew it aggravated his opponents and affected their play. After his first shot he walked around the table for 2 or 3 minutes. I just got up and bought a newspaper and started to read. It messed his mind up and kept me calm. I won.

I've actually started slowing down my game a bit. Too many times I've felt like I was in a "rhythm" and then I miss a shot and realize I was just in a rush. At my skill level I really need to spend more time understanding the layout and planning out my shots, then focusing on execution. With time I'm sure it will come more quickly but it's kind of like skiing... you don't start out racing down a black diamond... you start out going slowly down the bunny hill. Also if money's on the line I can also understand why a player would be slow. I sure wouldn't want to shoot a shot I'm not comfortable with just so my opponent doesn't get bored. :D

You haven't seen slow until you've been through the "Dick Lane" experience!

I watched him run 2 racks of one-pocket from the break (one his and one his opponents) and then break and run 7 on the third. It probably took 40 minutes.

This was at Galaxy Billiards in San Antonio.

Cheers,
RC

I play slower than most players. I never noticed it until my ex, DeWayne, commented on it. I like to walk around the table and see the angle of the shot, but I take no more than a minute. When I start rushing myself, I start missing. That or if I notice anyone watching me play. (Makes me nervous.)

i think im one of the quicker players around in my country. when i see im starting to almost miss some pots, positioning isnt going very well, not 100% sure what to do, i just INCREASE my speed till its back ok, and then slow down again so i can use my pre shot routine.

on the other hand, if im losing 0-3, i will DECREASE my speed alot, and do a double preshot routine. preshot routine, recheck ball, preshot, pot. Why i do this when im losing? Table time. its a term often used in snooker, but havent heared it yet in pool. If u are losing and had to sit in your chair for 3 or 4 frames, best way to get back in the match is to win as much table time without ofcourse going into excess. even if the score will only be 1-3, in my head it feels like 3-3 and i feel more confident i can win, just because he has been sitting down as much as me.

i dont really like my own technique, (i mean fairness), but i had 1 particular person using it vs me for 4 rankings in a row, and it MADE me lose the match. now i only use it when im tired of sitting down.

Dick Lane is really a nice guy and a heck of a player, but I would rather eat dirt than play him. It is a very painful experience and one that will make one want to inflict severe pain on his mother.
Brian Jones of Tulsa can be pretty painful as well.

I played a guy who took 43 strokes, got up, took another 35 and missed the ball. That episode almost made me quit pool.
Pool may or may not develope character in a person, but it sure reveals the character a person has.

There is such a thing as playing tooooooo ssssssllllllllooooooowwwww. If you think too much you could end up screwing yourself up. As bert kinister says, "You can think until you're paralyzed". My favorite thing is when a not so good player walks around the table 14 times lining up the shot and looking at every angle possible and then misses the pocket by a foot with no chance of getting position. Happens all the time when they are "lining up" banks and kick shots. Cracks me up.

I totally can't stand slow players.... I just can't understand what they are trying to figure out.... especially in 9 ball where there often isn't took much to think about.... shoot the 1 ... get position on the 2 or play safe?

I played in a 9 ball tournament last weekend... In the time I won my first two matches (races to 9), (I got screwed and had to play the extra round because there were 34 players), my next opponent, who started their match when I started my first, was at 5-3 ! I thought I'd watch to see what they were having problems with.... after 20 minutes and maybe 2 games completed I had to go for a walk outside... I wanted to push them out of the way and run the racks for them myself.

It obvious won the slower players are when one bracket of the tournament is 2 or 3 levels ahead of another.... totally anoying.

Shot clocks should be used even at the local tournament level or at least some type of warning system.

Chris -> who shoots too fast sometimes
