Taig mills

Looking for opinions on the Taig mills. I have about $1k to spend on an inlay machine, that, and doing trim rings is all it would be used for. I was wondering if there are models to stay clear of. I have done a search of the AZ archives and found some good info, but most were from 3yrs ago, and just wondering if anything has changed with time. If anyone has one for sale, let me know. Thanks,
Dave

You will need a little more Y travel.
A good spindle? The least maybe a bosch router for 150 or so.
Kress for 300+ if u want a little more accuracy.
4th axis controller or index, a few more bills.
:(
Or u can fork out the cash for Techno Isel or K2. Sell the car and drive a Yugo for a while.:D

I tried the car selling already, but no one wants my 92 Voyager:D
I figure some mods would need to be done, I'm not a big fan of MDF, so the first order of business would be to use this to mill out another bottom plate either of aluminum or maybe a thick sheet of delrin. Also the Z axis is alittle small-only 3", won't be enough for an indexing head, and tailstock.

Yea the 1K is pretty firm, It's based on my tax refund coming in next week. Plus the girlfriend has made the comment a few times in the last month about how I've spent enough money in the garage to have bought her 2 engagement rings and pay for the wedding  :D
I'm looking to get my feet wet with a low cost entry setup, then in time, stepup to a higher end one. Thanks for the advice Lee, I just wish I could afford the good toys:)

I bought a Sherline mill on ebay a couple of years ago and converted it to CNC. Having no prior experience, there was a steep learning curve but I got it working. It was very slow (20 pitch lead screws). It would work great on my test pieces (pine) but would be very prone to inaccuracy when cutting almost anything harder. The way the lead screws attach to the couplings was the weak point and I think they were slipping, causing the "lost steps." I sold it on ebay for under $1K and decided to wait until I can afford something better.
They're relatively cheap, and parts and modifications are plentiful. It was a great learning tool. Working out all the processes from designing to inlaying gave me a better understanding of what is involved and was well worth the time and money I spent on it.
I've made a few cues as a hobby. For me, working out the processes is the buzz. If cuemaking is what pays your bills, you might want to wait until you can afford a turn key setup.

Not sure if this helps but I have a Sherline Mill and lathe combo (both machines but 1 headstock/motor) I was about to put up on ebay. No tooling except for drill chuck on the mill and the lathe has a tool holder). There both clean units. I was estimating the set would sell for 500 bucks. Let me know if your interested. Its not CNC but it leaves you with a lot of pocket change left over, plus a lathe to play with. My ebay feedback is almost 6000 so no worries about getting burned. Just let me know asap because I was going to list it in the next few days. J

Sounds interesting, could you email a couple of pics to me? Tablesncues@comcast.net
Thanks,

Dave, I have just started using my taig for inlays. You will need quite abit additional money to get going. I would make sure that what ever controller you get for it supports the 4th axis if it doesn't come with it already. The sherline rotary is perfect. Also don't bother with making a tooling plate. A2Z has one already made and the table will mount right on.
http://a2zcnc.com/machinetools.asp this guy is easy to deal with and you can use paypal.
You could save some money and put the motors and controller on yourself.

good luck, jimbo.

Thanks, I actually have a controller, which is brand new that I bought, and 3 motors already from a unit that I got 2nd hand. It was a kit type that the person burned up the board on. I have played with getting it going again, and have, I've used the Mach3 demo version to run it, but there's way too much play in it and just don't feel like messing with it anymore. It was the type that uses storefront window frames for the rails and cutting boards for the tables etc..
I'm actually hoping to find a cnc ready machine, without the motors etc. so I can use the stuff I have.
Eventually I'll find the right unit.
