The spread #4

as you saw in my previous 2 stories the knocker has to be controlled
or eliminated

In the jersey Red episode i had to buy an image and when the detectives began knocking Red I had to feed them information to darken their councel and even enlist their aid

thinking they knew it all about me,without me saying a word they spread the news that I was easy money. In fact
they put their own money against me

But how do you remove a knocker from the arena, when his very i presence assures you of trouble.what a shame it is to have located the perfect mark and set the table with possibly a large seed (initial investment) only to have the whole sting jeopardized because
a nefarious tale bearer known as the KNOCKER ruins everything by telling (lifting my skirt as it was)
who you are ,how you play,or some such information that can ruin it all

Dealing with the Knocker has to be one of your specialties if you expect to lay down a good spread

usually the Knocker prides himself in his knowledge of all things in the pool room, and is always seeking to stick his nose in other people business, thus he is referred to as the detective. He learns a little and tells a lot.
his whole function is to tell everybody everything thus killing action,he is as responsible as anyone for killing good action

Why play if you already know the outcome?

Such a knocker in the way was present in greatest score . Johnny Ervolino, one of the greatest players I ever knew,Johnny could play, play at the highest level, knew the game inside out,was considered the final word on pool, won a Johnson City championship
etc

But Johnny had the tendency toward cynicism, plus he tended to talk,he drew a gallery who seemed to
listen to his every word,at first it was just to get respect or whatever, but soon it seemed he was actually trying to protect his hearers from losing their money.

Think about it,they lived in Las Vegas, they loved pool gambling, everyone came to the room to play and win,but here is the great champion trying to protect
the groupies who attended his lectures (informal as they were, but still providing him a podium from which to pontificate)

He might as well have gone to the casinos and told everyone in the joint"don't bet the spread, its a 3 to 2 house advantage" or stay away fom roulette the house take is too great" or stop every fun loving patron of the slots with"these machines are bandits, they give 5% to the house"

Well in the caper I wanted to tell you about Johnny had to be removed or his influence negated. before we could proceed with impunity
How do you think we proceeded in this episode?

Please put your opinions here if you want to .

You call him over and give him a steakroll. Then you send him to another town to play someone else that may or may not even exist. You write off that little amount so you are free to make a large amount. ;)

Johnny E. was truly something else. They called him The Velvet Foghorn for good reason. Johnny had this deep powerful voice that would resonate all over the poolroom, and I'm not joking. He did not know how to whisper! If you were sitting next to him and he engaged you in a normal conversation, everyone in the poolroom would hear everything that he said! You always knew Johnny was in the room. His soft (and very distinctive) voice could be heard 100 feet away!

He was the only guy I ever saw that would do "business" to take off someone he didn't like, and then tell him afterward in front of God and everybody what he just did. Johnny had brass balls the size of bowling balls. He mellowed in his old age after doing some serious time away from home (the poolroom). To his credit he could still play right up until the end. He was right there in speed with Jersey Red in One Pocket and played all games at the highest level as well.

Johnny would go searching for anyone that was betting big money. He didn't care who they were or what their reputation was. He went all the way to Toledo, Ohio in the early 60's to find Teddy Elias, a top flight Straight Pool player. Teddy was playing anyone and everyone and betting high. They played one game to 200 for $7,000 each (early 60's money!) and Johnny took him off. I heard he ran a 90 something to close Teddy out. Johnny had bet all the money he and his road partner had on one game, playing in unfamiliar surroundings. Impressive to say the least.

I'm not surprised Johnny might knock a game. He always played by his own rules in life. He had his own moral code which may have differed significantly from other peoples.

I was in a poolroom one afternoon bored, and showed a trick shot that looks impossible to a couple of guys I knew,
There is a young guy standing by the desk eyeballing also.
Later after they left, another guy I know comes in and says, Fred said you showed him a great shot , can I see it?
Now there are about 15 people in the place, mostly standing around waiting on something to happen.
I set the balls up and the young guy runs over with a cue and hits the shot.
Every time I thought about that moon pie running over, and shooting the shot, like he figured it out, I started laughing for the rest of the week.
The OP must have been a nice guy, where I am from , they just gave you some D Con and when you were in the bathroom emptying out, one of the GPCs would come in, and do the Hines Brothers tap dancing act on your head
and say , next time mind your own business.
To show how determined some people are , I saw one guy get the treatment 3 times before he finally figured it out.
From then on he was like one of those monks that swears a vow of silence , he didn't know nothin, ain't seen nothin and does a disappearing act Houdini would have been proud of, if it even remotely looks like somethings going down.
While I never condoned this remedy, I do see it's merits.

Hmmmmm , he already told this story before , thats why I referenced moon pie running over right away to show how sharp he was.
Perhaps you don't even remember seeing it originally.
Or maybe you didn't see it or hear about it and you are triple smart , either way ,have a great day.
Sorry, OP didn't mean to derail the thread.
Please continue.

There used to be this notorious pool-detective here in Tulsa. This sob knocked a lot of action until he knocked "the wrong guy". Turned-out that the guy 'ol pd had knocked had fought at the IaDrangValley in 'nam AND was a GoldenGlove winner. Needless to say the pool detective's career ended that day. That vet knocked that nit halfway across the room. Dude WAS smart enough to never come around the pool scene again. Sorry deano, back to your tale.

He asked our opinion. Big difference between that and knocking. I guess in your opinion we are to ignore him when he asks our opinion.

Been called a lot of things before. But a knocker, that's a first.

I didn't say you were a knocker or even think it.

Lets hear the rest of the story so I can decide if I am losing it or not. {50/50 is prob about right.
